They immediately stopped in early November 2020, though some people believe they carried on to early January of the next year. But it was like magic, all of a sudden the government wasn't responsible for covid deaths anymore. How fortuitous!

People like this miss the point.
I don't like Trump and I've never voted for him, but Trump voters don't care about the economy or COVID or whatever; they just like him because they dislike Democrats, and Trump is aggressively anti-Democrat.
So when this happens:
Trump: "I decreased the price of gas to 50 cents."
...the pundit is wasting his or her time. No one cares that Trump is wrong. Meaning, Trump voters don't care that he's wrong, and everyone else wasn't going to vote for Trump anyway.
I'm probably ruining my reputation by admitting that I voted for Harris (I cast a mail-in ballot the other day) mainly because I oppose Trump. But I don't oppose him because a Democrat showed me a pamphlet and a spreadsheet showing all of Trump's lies. I don't care about the facts and figures. I care that Trump is a harmful narcissist who doesn't care about anything (I actually think that he's a nihilist rather than a narcissist; but I'll talk about that in another post).
If you want to get people to vote for Harris, then emphasize Trump's moral failings. Emphasize his disgusting personality. Don't dwell on fact-checking him; no one cares about the facts.
And I don't mean that in a goony redditor elitist "the American electorate is so stupid! They're cattle! They're sheep!" I esteem Americans (I am one) and we are aggressively intelligent, trust me. American voters are informed and vote based on facts. In normal times.
But these aren't normal times. we're living in weird times, where the Republican candidate is running 100% on his personality. When a candidate is running on personality and nothing else, then it's foolish to try to correct him when he lies. Ignore the lies. Focus on the fact that he's an butthole.
