The closest thing to "real communism" I can think of were the Black Army controlled areas of Ukraine during the civil war. Things weren't to bad. Mostly because the Black Army was anarchist and kind of just left the self sufficient peasants alone to operate things as the had always done in a technically or loosely collectivized fashion. The Balcks did away with money, but the Rubel was almost worthless anyway and the peasants didn't have much to begin with. The main problem was that there was a war going on and the Black Army was eventually crushed by the more organized Red Army and it was all downhill from there.TLDR socialism works if you don't do much socialism, are largely self sufficient, don't have a government, and don't mind getting invaded by your more organized neighbors (2)
