That's some serious chutzpah on the university's part, if you think about it. So they sold a bunch of slaves 180 years ago, made a nice profit, and now they "atone" for it by making their current students pay the descendants of the slaves.
I mean, it's not even "one group's descendants pay to the other group's descendants" however questionable that may be, in this case the people who pay weren't involved at all.
