The same happened to me. When I was 7 months old, my mother fell down the stairs and tragically passed away. My maternal grandparents were devastated, and after a visit from my Dad, sent a letter saying essentially they don't ever want to see me and that my Dad doesn't owe them anything. I sent a few letters but my Grandmother no longer replies.
