The USA is compared to dying Rome often, but it seems London is much further along that road. Like ancient Rome, London is increasingly dependent on massive shipments of food from across the sea so a gigantic, growing class of people who do nothing but eat, have sex, and absorb entertainment, solely so they can continue to eat.
These people come to the Great City, of course, solely because of all the food the rulers offer to them. The rulers shower the indolent with food because it makes them popular and cements their status.
The big difference, of course, is the UK holds practically nothing over anybody. It has no legions exacting tribute. It still exports first-world manufactures and, increasingly, "financial services."
But a flood of gibbering, street-shitting third-worlders isn't going to increase the quality of jet engines and cars the UK can export. They're just more mouths to feed. What the example of Rome should remind us is how precarious the whole thing is. London relies on foreign soldiers (Americans) for its physical security, foreign fields for its material security, and has set up a political system designed to create an exploding mass of eaters who those foreigners are expected to keep feeding and protecting for some reason.
