My top heartbreak albums

3  2019-10-04 by NorthNegotiation

After recently having had my heart broken by a cute, tiny Chinese woman in her 20s with the body of a little boy (possibly actually a little boy but still quite unlikely) I found myself searching through my vinyl collection, trying to find some records to soothe the pain. Thus I managed to come up with the following list of ultimate records you should listen to right after having your heart broken:

  • Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks (1975)

This is the classic heartbreak album, featuring songs like "If you see her say hello" or "You're gonna make me lonesome when you go". In fact it's a bit of a cliche to listen to it while going through a phase of emotional pain which is why this is only recommended if you live alone without roommates or family; otherwise they definitely will make fun of you for it.

  • Warren Zevon - The Wind (2003)

This is the final Zevon album which he recorded after getting his cancer diagnosis. While it's definitely not his greatest; Excitable Boy, Sentimental Hygiene and Warren Zevon are obviously in a better position to get to the top spot, it does have a certain something; songs like "She's too good for me" "Please Stay" and "Keep me in your Heart" could be included in every quality heartbreak list.

  • Weezer - Pinkerton (1996)

Like me Pinkerton was after it's release initially poorly received. It took the critics years to recognise the genius behind lyrics such as "God damn these half-Japanese girls do it to me every time" or "I'm dumb. She's a lesbian.". Nonetheless Pinkerton contains many classic tales of heartbreak such as falling for an adolescent Japanese girl (Across the Sea) or imagining married life with a girl who turns out to be a lesbian (Pink Triangle). "I think I'd be good for you and you'd be good for me" also successfully manages to sum up in few words how I felt about the few girls I had a crush on.

  • The Smiths - The Smiths (1984)

The Smiths are actually a quite cheerful band at times if you manage yo ignore Morrissey's lyrics. Still the debut album The Smiths is mostly just depressing. While The Queen Is Dead has some better romantic lyrics (And if a double decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die) and both could fit the slot this one has Reel Around The Fountain. And who among us hasn't walked behind a tiny Asian woman who from behind looks a bit like a young boy without thinking "Fifteen Minutes with you. Well I wouldn't say no."?

  • Joni Mitchell - Blue (1971)

This one's an absolute classic. Many of the songs deal with love and relationships and the scarce instrumentation contributes to the overall melancholic feeling of the album. It also contains my favourite love song, being "A case of you".
