Not just a normal appeal to popularity, but appealing to a specific demographic which the most outspoken subset of members are disproportionately mentally ill and histrionic. Which is why the spoilers when the last Endgame movie were such a big deal, got people permanently banned off of reddit, and provoked such extreme outbursts in response. Which is why it felt so amazing to spoil it for these people.
