It's worked pretty well for me in the past, but I've pretty much been poly in name only--I am a misanthrope and the number of people I like enough to tell them I care about them has never been higher than 1 at a time, so to me my "poly" relationships were mostly just regular relationships that were open sexually. It didn't bother me that the poly girls I had been involved with actually loved the other men they were sleeping with, it was probably healthier than what I was doing, having meaningless sex with women I didn't even like.
