If you look at the older traditions, Eastern Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Coptics and what not, they have a very different view of what Christianity is compared to the traditions that morphed from the Catholic Church. You're right in that most Western people believe the Jew God hates the gays, but there is an actual biblical case to be made for God loving the gays. Of course there's a biblical case to be made for just about everything, so take that as you will.
