Widespread semi-literacy unironically is a tool of the liberal and neoliberal leviathan to fool midwits and egotistical tards ito supporting it. And as it’s essentially impossible to have a truly literate populace in the broad sense, functional or even total illiteracy is preferable; also entirely unironically.
I really hate how some people seem to giddily promote mindless pleasure fiction because they think that it's a solution to lack of reading in society. They even seem to take joy in putting down literary classics, oh we'd have so much more reading if literature teachers wouldn't shove that boring old stuff like Dostoyevsky that's such a snore, and would instead concentrate on page turners like twilight.
Like they implicitly assume that reading is the most legitimate and highest form of entertainment, it's a better activity than other forms of entertainment. And at the same there is no apparent difference in how high or legitimate various kinds of reading are, no, any attempt to draw such qualification are harmful because high literature might be boring and thus discourage reading.
I'm like clearly this is a load of nonsense. Reading is not good for its own sake, it's not an inherently higher medium regardless of content. It is better to not read, than to read Twilight. Planescape Torment is a thousand times better use of your time and higher than reading Dan Brown.
Modern literary fiction though tends to be inward looking and masturbatory, really that's why literary classics are so good. They weren't self consciously trying to write literary fiction so they had none of that masturbatory garbage.
It's really depressing to see what happened to romance fiction. Like people read Jane Austen, all they got out of it was oh Mr Darcy made me so hot but Jane Austen was such a prude and never vividly described them screwing, I'll rip out all those boring other characters and dialogue that pointlessly parodied the vapidity of social relationships in that Era, and improve it by just making my self insert screw Mr Darcy for 90% of the novel. Hell maybe she'll screw Wickham as well and I'll flick it to that, then Mr Darcy will kill him and it will be so hot having them fight over me, then she'll screw Mr Darcy again.
