The next day I made my stand. I told them that a jury was the one time where the law could be outright defied, where personal bias was absolute and unchallenged. My case 15 years earlier I talked about; I explained how people let logic, facts and reason convince them to do the wrong thing and shift off responsibility, and how it still haunted me to this day. I told them Oscar and his family had no written record of fights with other tenants, with public disturbance, with missing rent payments, etc. and that 29 years of loyalty shouldn’t be punished. And finally I declared in pure moral terms that I did not want to create four more homeless people in Los Angeles.
They told me to stop talking. And then happily voted 9-3 to evict.
For our first vote we write on paper ballots for ‘EVICT’ or ‘NOT EVICT’ and the first count is 5 evict and 7 no. A dread hits me—I’ve travelled back to 15 years ago and I’m gonna have to argue with another bunch of fucking asshole jurors.
