Just because something is a delusion it doesn't neccesary hurt society. For example placebo is also a delusion, yet it has a positive effect. Religion is also a delusion and it gives people a community and makes them happy, even though what they believe in is not true. Despite many things making people believe falsehoods, they still can increase their well-being.
I already adressed the delusion part. Amputation, circumsision and kidney donation can be considered "mutilation" too, yet they might be necesarry in certain cases, like when you donate your kidney to your relative so they can survive with the new kidney.
