Nah you actually have to pay attention to people and remember a bunch of shit. Engineering is way easier just do like an hour of work and listen to podcasts in a cubicle.
In certain states in the US there are ‘server wages’ which are way lower than minimum wage (amounting to like $2/hr) because it’s expected by the state that people will tip these employees to bridge the gap from $2 to the minimum wage. If tips don’t cover the gap there’s supposed to be recourse through your employer but I’ve never heard of anyone actually pursuing that successfully.
If you don't make 7.25 an hour with tips you are required to be payed minimum wage. You have a federal (and often state) safety net that usually puts you on level with line cooks who don't get tips.
Lemme yell you, pal, as a former line cook: waitfags make BANK or else they'd be working in the kitchen or literally any other unskilled labor. They bitch and moan and abuse the kitchen staff not because they have a hard job but because they're all whiny mayo foids with baby brains, and they wouldn't be satisfied even if every person they served was licking their feet and giving them 100% tips.
That’s what I said Re: tips must bridge the gap between servers wages and minimum else there should be recourse (although I’ve never personally known anyone to hassle their employer on a slow tip day).
I’m not saying they don’t make a lot of money. My main point is that the expectation of tipping isn’t strictly cultural and a bonus in addition to regular wages but built into minimum wage laws through a reduction of employer-paid wages for tipped staff.
Ah shit I misread your comment I'm a retard. Though my spiel still goes for the rest of this thread. Of all the things I hate serving staff and canadians are probably number 1.
tipping by inertia is retarded. if it actually worked as an incentive scheme rather than people feeling socially obligated to always tip 15% it would be good

Tipping in itself retarded, but all of professions you could chose to tip tipping waiters is just the dumbest thing ever.
Is there even an easier job in the world than writing down things on a piece of paper and then carrying plates to a table?

Waiting is unironically difficult
