There are great animes, like NGE or AoT. I don't give a shit if the right hates me for that because they are great shows.
Good comment, but NGE is overrated. I'm more of a Hajime no Ippo, Kaiji and Jojo man myself. AoT is amazing after the first season, though. The first season was just mediocre, but the third was a banger
NGE is super psychological and a lot of people just don't expect that with mech fights or whatever. I mean it's all subjective, but NGE is a masterpiece imo. I haven't seen any of the other you mention, I just finished Code Geass though and that was pretty good. Ending was 10/10, rest of the show was alright though.
I was told that NGE gets kind of funky in the later episodes, but it was just super boring. I've liked a lot more experimental and weird stuff than that; Evangelion was just boring. None of it made any sense or really connected for me about the supposed "deep" stuff it had in it. I joke a lot about how people make overwritten essays and theories about the minutest of details. Maybe they're accurate, but they all come to different conclusions about what should be relatively clear: what the story is inherently about. It doesn't have to shove it down your throat, but you should be able to enjoy something on a surface level before you have all these funky details and I just didn't vibe with any of it.
Jojo is kind of infamous for not being that deep and being hard to get into, yeah. Especially a lot of people dislike part 1. Some people really hate 2 and I think 3 is a bit too long. I think 2, 4 and 7 are like 10/10, but 3, 6 and 8 are mediocre.
Kaiji is a pretty damn good gambling anime. It's very slow-moving and I could get some people not being able to like some stuff like the titular character, but it's pretty great. Been meaning to read the manga which I think is still going. Great show except they REALLY slow the pace in the last arc of the anime. It's unbearable at times.
Hajime no Ippo is just a fantastic boxing anime. Doesn't matter if you hate boxing, it's amazing. The show does drop off after the first series (first 75 episodes + OVAs) and I haven't even finished it because the third season is relatively a bit meh, but I would probably recommend reading the manga after that. It doesn't have the same magic, great as it still is, don't get me wrong. Other people seem to love all of it.
Yeah Eva is definitely not for everyone. I'm the type of person that listens to music for lyrics though so I'm a bit obsessive and since the show was so cryptic it was perfect for me. And I related to a lot of the characters as time went on and saw a lot of it in myself, no other anime, or any other western show for that matter really connected with me like Eva did. There's a reason I rarely recommend Eva to people unless I know for sure they'd like it.
I'll definitely get around to the boxing one, I've seen clips of it and it does look great. I'm not huge into boxing specifically but I like martial arts a lot.
As far as JoJo goes I did get past part 1 and really enjoyed some parts, I like American JoJo as a character but there was just something about the show that I didn't vibe with. I may give it a go in the future when I get through some other classics.
