Apparently this happened because they wanter to LARP as Internet jannies, so they fired one of their own after finding out he was a closet MDEgenerate.
It didn't occur to them that firing someone with access to sensitive information because of their anonymous internet opinions might not be a good idea.

wasn't valve. it's some group of vnn-hangerons who had some fan project. this is an old leak from like 2 years ago (the source code is ~4-5 years old)
