I’ve always loved reading novels written by soldiers fighting in different wars. Here are some of my favorites.
Goodbye to All-That by Robert Graves
Dispatches by Micheal Herr
A Rumor of War by Philip Caputo
Storm of Steel by Ernst Junger
If I Die In The Combat Zone by Tim o’Brian (writer of the things they carried.)
Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes
Currently I’m reading Les Miserables. Finished Don Quixote the other day and can’t recommend it enough. I’m also reading Mein Kampf on the side but that is neither here nor there
If you’re looking for something a bit more fun natured look up the Flashman papers. Great Comical historical fiction. The main character is a scoundrel, womanizer, and racist. He calls every non-euro he meets in his travels around the world from America to Indonesia the N word. In other words he’s an absolute Chad. His personality is supposed to come off as so abhorrent that it’s funny.
I just finished El Señor Presidente by Miguel Angel Asturias, the best latino dictator novel ever written. Magical Realism Banana Republic Faulkner. I highly recommend.

The Tartar Steppe, Dino Buzzati. It's...you don't really want to waste your life anymore once you read it. At least for a couple of hours anyway.

I will look into this. Thanks for the recommendation.
Update . Nevermind I read this like 20 years ago. I think I'll give it another read though.
