I think during conscription some people chose to go as medics and not bear arms though. But it's from WW2. And it was mostly a thing in Europe. Germans were pretty decent with medics and ambulances. The japs shot medics, in fact they found those red crosses made aiming easier.

I think the last conflict with conscription in the US was vietnam, and they didn't care AFAIK (plus booby traps don't make a difference).

I was not participating as a combatant because I was a kid. A terrorist group tried to force their way into the heart of the country and started an expansion campaign to the North-East, while they had their roots in the South-East. The people in the North never supported these terrorists and they could never catch a hold in our region, but it is a region that is basically 90% mountains, so they still had small operating terrorists somewhere in nowhere on mountains, and sometimes they would try to strike.
