[Recap] [Effort] Organizers of a brony convention in Las Vegas mismanaged their budget, possibly embezzled money, and skipped town during the convention, leaving attendees and guest stars to get thrown out

Over the weekend, a large brony convention called Las Pegasus Unicon happened at the Riviera Hotel in Vegas. On Saturday, someone pulled the the fire alarm during the convention. (TRIGGER WARNING: Bronies) It was a false alarm, and everything proceeded back to normal, at least until Sunday (but I'll get back to this in a moment). Guest stars such as voice actors for the MLP show started getting thrown out of their hotel rooms which were supposed to be paid for by the convention organizers, however it turned out they had not paid. The guests were left to pay out of pocket and had no means of paying. Voice actors, musicians, and writers spent most of the day on Sunday autographing at half price all day to make up for it. Keep in mind, a very large chunk of the core show staff was present for this entire shitstorm.

In the mean time, the convention organizers were nowhere to be found. They, along with all of the remaining funds, had disappeared. Volunteers panicked and were emotionally distraught because there was no organization and everything went to shit. Hotel staff figured out what was happening midway through Sunday and started throwing out guests and attendees, asking vendors to pack up and hit the road, and even interrupting guest panels to shut them down.

Now, obviously it's just a conspiracy theory, but the word on the street is the fire alarm pulled on Saturday was a manufactured ploy by the convention organizers to get the hell out of dodge while everyone was distracted, possibly taking money with them (obviously there is no proof of this, but most signs all point to this possibly being the case).

Show staff began auctioning off items to donate as part of 'a relief effort' to correct the situation (also seen here). Attendees who stayed at the hotel initially with a convention discount were now forced to pay more out of pocket than they had planned because the convention fell through and the hotel didn't get their money.

Voice Actress Tara Strong was one of the most vocal about how horrid of a time she had,

Earlier tonight, the convention staff responded on their website:

Between last minute add-ons by the hotel/convention center employees, (on top of a 5 month swim through their lies and misdirections) equipment rental changes, un-authorized transportation charges, unmentioned union labor costs, and two dozen other unexpected last-week costs, our convention operations budget had been depleted. Now this is not to say that the voice actors and other MLP:FiM cast members had been overlooked. Contrary to some unfounded and untrue statements, the celebrities’ agents have all received monies from us - both prior to the convention and during. Exactly how much has been received by the agents is impossible to say with certainty. We have records of payments totaling in excess of $40,000 to the various agents. However, an unknown amount of cash was witnessed, on more than one occasion on Sunday, being directly removed by an agent of the stars from our cash box. Additionally, all monies raised by EFN’s fundraiser and all autograph sales went uncounted directly to the stars’ agents.

Response from an inbetween for the VAs to the fandom

This is where we stand now, so with the accused party now accusing the guest's agents of taking their money without permission.

Anyway you slice it, this shitstorm is only going to get more heated. Show staff might feel their trust has been betrayed and could start cancelling future conventions or not booking at all. The missing money is all still unaccounted for and

Here's an excerpt from 4chan for the TL;DR of it:

Let me give you a greentext since OP apparently fled:

>Be in a brony group

>Have no previous organizing experience

'Hai guise, lets make a pony convention, it'll be easy'

>Do Unicon Las Vegas

>Saturday

>The con is literally rolling in money

>Have VA and a lot of staff members in a 5 star hotel

>The hotel and the casino will be paid WHILE the con advances

>A fire alarm went off, just a stupid faggot Or so it seemed...

>Sunday

'Guise, we don't have money, it magically disappeared'

>Put the VAs in an autograph sweatshop A FUCKING SIGNED BANANA FOR $50

>Everything is breaking apart

>Staff having emotional breakdowns, passing out

>Staff, VAs and guests kicked out of hotel rooms because no money

>Con orgs nowhere to be found

>Money nowhere to be found

And there you have it. This drama is STILL DEVELOPING and may be updated in the future.

EDIT 1: More responses from staff and a claim to know the suspect, 4chan's /mlp/ board dubs the event "HurriCON Sandi" after the organizer's name

Edit 2: Nothing new to report, just rumors with no evidence to go off of whatsoever (such as the supposed hotel statement saying they owe $16,000 or something ridiculous). I'll be going to bed now, but I will update when I wake up with the latest news, even if there isn't any, just to let you know either way.
