What would you do in this situation?

So, some of my local family members and I decided months ago to go visit family in another state for Thanksgiving (about 10 hours from where we live.) We decided to drive there and we were all going to go together. One group of family members were having car problems so one of the aunts offered an extra car to them to make the trip safely. At the last minute, another cousin decided she wanted to come along and said she would drive the family that was going to use the aunt's car, up early instead. The rest of the family (with the aunt that offered the car) made the trip and everyone enjoyed a nice holiday- until it was time to leave. The weather stations and state department of transportation issued winter weather advisories for the route that we all took to get there. Snow chains were recommended. Well, the aunt's car did not have chains so another route home without snow was suggested. It took approximately 2 hours more than the way we went. The cousin that drove the family (with a baby and small child) had no money for gas to get home, so gas money was offered up so everyone could get home safely together in a caravan. I should also mention that if the aunt's car should need chains, it would be about $200 to get them because of an odd tire size in a rural community. The family with the 2 small children didn't feel comfortable going the potential snow ridden route either. So, what does the cousin do? They get in their car, call someone to wire money to them and they drive home. Alone. Without the family they brought with them. That family had no other way to get home and they are actually still stuck in another state. Lucky for the cousin, the weather predictions were a bit early and they actually beat the snow but again, the other 10 people in the caravan didn't feel comfortable taking the chance with small kids. Coupled with the fact that we would risk having to buy chains at a premium price. All over 2 hours time. Plus, we were all thinking that if we did need to use chains, then the "longer" way would probably be the faster way due to having to drive super slow with chains. So, who is wrong? The 10 people that wanted to go the non potential snow route or the person who left the family behind? Curious about other opinions on this....
