I was disappointed by this episode, I might just be blinded by ideology but none of the jokes really landed for me, I could definitely detect some pandering and tiptoeing (they never let Frank say nigger!) and the songs were pretty lame. I feel like all the characters should have been saying nigger and we should have gotten another Sweet Dee racial caricature
Once they turned black they began self censoring themselves to not appear racist, under the assumption that if they "learned something" they might turn back. That was pretty obvious and something repeated multiple times by like every character.

Just because they came up with the plot reason for tiptoeing around racial stuff didn't make it enjoyable.
As far as the plot preventing Frank saying it, fair enough, but there's a lot more depth available for racial humor than just dragging out "nigger" and I think the episode did well exploring that. I don't think it was tiptoeing racial stuff at all, really. It was pretty over the top.
All the jokes in the episode were callbacks or hacky I want to say the n-word, we had a black president before the orange one
There are always the low hanging fruit jokes and really, had they trotted out "nigger", it would have been the same cheap, lazy attempt. It would just be edgier for the insufferable Tumblr crowd who have issues with.. everything. But not all the humor of the episode came from those jokes.
I dunno what to tell you. I generally hate musical episodes of shows but this was surprisingly funny. Scott Bakula's song alone was worth the 20+ minutes.
What makes you think it's pandering, and not sincerely held beliefs? Was there ever any doubt that they're liberal? How many conservative comedy actors do you know of?
Alwaus Sunny in Philadelphia. It's one of my favorite shows. Been watching since season 1 first aired. Netflix has all of it except the newest season which literally just started this week.
It's been said multiple times on /r/television and almost has become cliche at this point that "it's always sunny might be the most consistently funny show I have ever seen", but it is the truth
I was so excited for this and didn't realise it was airing so soon! ...but I didn't find myself laughing that much at this episode. Maybe my social commentary laugh-box is broken after 2016.

Someone is pissed off that a show that addresses racism in its very first episode has finally succumbed to the SJEWS.

AVClub predictably loved it

How would that have been funny in context?

In fact in context I'd imagine the Old Black Man would dream of at least a few of them as racist.
All the jokes in the episode were callbacks or hacky I want to say the n-word, we had a black president before the orange one
Also I always enjoy Sweet Dee's impressions

I love how people are mad that the humor isnt 4th grade enough for them.

The funniest part was seeing that little black kid get shot.
n/a atakeonhooper 2017-01-06
that was literally the funniest part of the episode

As much as I hate to agree w/ avclub about anything, that episode was hilarious.

What happened to the AVC, I remember I used to love it years ago, but now whenever I check back it's shit. Has it changed or have I?

It was okay. Some laughs. Wish frank had said nigger like he wanted too though.

If you weren't laughing within the first five minutes then you are part of the problem
n/a clintonbro 2017-01-06
It is a problem! I laughed more at the Man Seeking Woman premier, Always Sunny hath forsaken me
n/a SpookyMood 2017-01-06
Nah IASIP aint like that man. They are far from being a pc show, and being liberal doesnt mean that they are pc

Always Sunny always leaned both ways whether it was about abortion or guns or a lot of other things.

That episode was painful to watch, not because I thought it was racist or anything, but because it was pure unfunny shit.
