He's not that whiny. He just said he doesn't like the internet that much, and this combined with his bird watching habits gives him a kind of old-man-shakes-stick persona. Gawker et al. was really going after him back in the day, probably because he represented the old guard of earnest white male literary figures. They also took issue over his preoccupation with scat and enlarged clitorises.
He's like the Kanye West of the literary world. Both extremely hated and extremely loved. He's not my favourite novelist but the amount of drama and resentment he inspires in hacky MFA types is entertainment enough.
Ah i see. That kind of makes me like him more, and does make sense considering his books and their subject matter. Most of the writers i like most are dead (the old white guard coincidentally i guess) but hes one of the few living ones i like. I like murakami a bit more though.
