So it's a weird "man bites dog" case, on multiple levels. Naturally it attracted a lot of attention, much more than any "dog bites man" instance of white-on-black racism.
I feel like the main reason the white kids had such a horseshit sentence is that they didn't post a video of the act on facebook while cursing black people.
I'll agree that the Idaho case is bullshit and should have resulted in prison time.
But there can't be sentencing parity between these two cases. The Chicago victim was beaten, stabbed, burned and disfigured. The attackers called his mother and demanded $300 for his return.
Kidnapping-for-ransom carries a potential life sentence. It used to be a capital offense in many states. The assault isn't just an aggravated battery, it's much worse. It's the type of aggravated battery that states like California still call "mayhem" (intentional infliction of a severe or disfiguring injury) to distinguish it from other types of battery.
They didn't simply intend to humiliate the victim, or even sexually assault him. They wanted to permanently alter his quality of life.
Without drawing any further comparison between the two crimes, the Chicago incident just can't end without significant prison time for the attackers. That another person got a too-lenient punishment in another case doesn't change that.
It'd still be true if the Chicago attackers were white and their victim black.
