In my day a meme died the day it hit mainstream. If some crusty old Russian diplomat tweeting that horrid looking frog doesn't kill it then nothing will.
True memes evolve beyond their cages. A truly evolved meme is one so mainstream that we don't even think about it. Pepe is reaching this stage, soon Pepe will just be another face found on shirts or logos.
Eh, context matters. If Pepe hit mainstream in the form of an out of touch reporter trying to be funny, it would be dead. Likewise, if a meme from four years ago went mainstream after Romney started calling it a symbol of communism to try and paint Obama and his supporters as communists, and then an embassy of a foreign country tweeted it in response to accusations that Obama was their puppet, you can bet your ass it would still be hilarious.
How did you feel about it? I mean I was reading the thing along with PA and a few others around 04-05 so the whole thing was pretty torrential when it happened. I feel it's a very classic case of super-cringe but since I don't have an outside perspective I don't know how cringey it is on today's levels.
You should read the storyline for a few weeks after that panel. Basically the author got really pissed off at everyone, then realized his mistake writing a month or so long storyline of awkward bullshit about the main character traveling through time to save us from his awkwardness.
"The creator" just drew a picture of a frog saying "feels good man" in an obscure comic series that no-one ever read, the actual creator of the meme that deserves all the credit is 4chan.
He drew the frog but the meme was created before he was born. It simply used his talents to create itself and now it will punish those who did not help create it.
Hillary's campaign site said so, so everyone had to at least pretend to believe it to not be called a Nazi, so there's people that truly believe it and people that pretend to believe.
Yeah. Exactly. So saying "it isn't" is not really fair. Having a discussion about the timeline between alt-right racist use and the use in the trump community is what some are pointing out as important rather than the black and white issue of "is or isn't ".
Yeah. Exactly. So saying "it isn't" is not really fair.
The biggest mistake of Hillary's campaign was going after Pepe for being tied to Nazism instead of the Anime Girls when Anime Girls was a much stronger soundboard.
Why do I care? Or why do people who call it racist care? People who call it racist care about the timeline because of obvious reasons... like... the timeline of the swastika. Pre-hitler it didn't stand for the name thing world wide.
I asked you why a timeline matters because you are the one that brought it up. Who am I supposed to ask? Anyways I'm not looking for anything serious, I'm sure you're a swell person and I wish you the best in life. Ta.
The ADL's list of hate symbols has to be taken in context. They are not saying that Pepe is only a racist symbol, just that it has been used as one. Just like the swastika is not only a nazi symbol, but to deny the association would be idiotic. Similarly, the Wolfsangel has a long history of being a heraldic symbol, boundary marker, lucky icon, and symbol of Germanic heathenry and the Church of Satan. It's also a nazi symbol.
Yeah, sorry, didn't mean to imply that, but I've seen a lot of hate for the ADL for being over sensitive about this sort of stuff before. Frankly, I think the ADL is a little oversensitive, but given the history of the Jewish people, I can hardly blame them.
I would imagine most groups that deal with hate on a daily basis might be over sensitive. However, it is one of those opportunities to imagine what it's like to be looking at things through that perspective.
I don't follow ALL politics from ALL countries around the world (and neither do you), so why don't you link an article and we can find out together. Anything else you need help with?
I don't know what you're thinking. Pepe has always been an white nationalist symbol on par with Klan robes, burning crosses, and swastikas, and we've always been at war with Eastasia.
They like being able to find a reason to hate someone or something, and "this person did or said something that can be misconstrued to make them a literal Nazi" is an easy way to feel good about dehumanizing them and crapping all over them.
In short, some people started to feel bad about crapping on people online, so they started looking for an excuse to not feel bad. Which I don't understand: if you want to mock someone online, mock them; you just look like a retard if you have to justify it.
People say that /pol/ is what made Pepe a "White nationalist symbol", if you ask me it's all these retarded reporters insisting that it's a hate symbol. Honestly most of the Nazi Pepe stuff was made just to piss off the people who were claiming that it was being co-opted or someshit.
Like sure, some pepes are racist. But Pepe itself isn't.
I want to go back to a simpler time when Pepe was slitting Wojacks throat and shitting down it.
Not even five or six years ago would I have guessed that mainstream politics came to arguing over whether an anthropomorphic frog is white supremacist or not. I officially give up on humanity.
Oh, god... for reals that frog is going to be textbooks. It's going to be used as a symbol for our age. He's Rosie the Riveter for low status white men.
I'm devising a system with a sort of tiered access. Children have certain access to academic, scholastic and education content, with limited "entertainment" categories, and "adults" between 18-25 require aptitude tests and licenses to access their own tiers. Certain content is available to all, but some of it needs to be curated to certain ages and intelligence/knowledge levels.
"adults" between 18-25 require aptitude tests and licenses to access their own tiers. Certain content is available to all, but some of it needs to be curated to certain ages and intelligence/knowledge levels.
Yeah my dude lets let the state dictate what information we can and can't see.
It's actually pretty crap.......force the internet to be decentralized.
I take it that you know nothing of the "backbone" of the internet. The actual fiber optic cables, the routers, the servers and the men and women who maintain them.
It's times like this when you wish that Churchill got his wish and Operation Unthinkable went through. The Russian government's uppity smugness is surely the worst consequence of the election of our imbecile.
I can understand that attitude. We have a bit of a history with the Russians after all that Cold War crap. Putin's also a self-serving tyrant. Not good guy at all. So I'm on the same page you are.
I think the reason so many people would like to be pals with Russia is that our traditional allies have gone soft and are letting themselves be overrun with a deluge of 3rd World Crazy. The diversity for the sake of diversity mindset hasn't been good for anyone. Putin, for all his other faults, hasn't let that happen to his country. He puts Russia and Russians first. If a bunch of terrorists take hostages he kills all the terrorists even if he has to kill all the hostages to do it. Then he goes after their families. He makes an example of why it's a bad idea to screw around on his turf and piss him off.
Putin is brutal and effective and people mistake that for strength. Real strength is being effective without resorting to brutality. Sadly, without any examples of real strength to point to many people are making that mistake.
I don't think we should submit to the Russians just because of Germany's immigration policy (criticism of which is overblown). Most of the anti-EU sentiment can be traced to Russian propaganda outlets as a way to weaken the west. No fan of Islam but they are simply not a threat to the west. Whether you take Islam as some syrian refugee or KSA. In fact in terms of Islam threatening the west Iran would take that crown not any Sunni group.
I don't really care if Putin loves his country or Russians (with his level of corruption I doubt that's true). He has positioned himself as an obstacle and his country as the most troubling opponent to Western hegemony. Probably because he's bitter about the 90's.
Also it's hilarious you think our allies are weak. Even if the US left NATO they could still take Russia on. NATO has two security council members (UK, France) and at least two other great militaries (Germany, Poland). Russia wouldn't be wise to attempt to attack that. Especially considering that unlike Russia they have more than half a dozen allies. With the US back in then it's so hilariously off balanced that it looks like a comparison between US and Russian male life expectancy. Add in nukes if you want but France and UK are armed too and pretty much any nuclear gambit between multiple powers is universal rage quitting.
Knowing this Russia's only hope to not further collapse is to spread propaganda and subvert the wishes of the west. Which is why moronic whores like Le Pen and Trump are so shameless about lapping down Putin's cum. He enables their normally dead in the water political careers.
If you do care about the biggest threat to the West it's Russia. It's always been Russia. Not lefties, muslims, or even China. China's philosophy in increasing its power is entirely different than Russia's.
That's nice, dear, but 90% of it has little or nothing to do with what I said. I think Putin's pretty fucking terrible, just like you. I was just explaining why other think he's peachy-keen.
Your reasoning is that our allies are somehow "weak" (they aren't) because you don't like Germany's immigration policy (most of the hate towards it isn't based in reality) therefore we should be friends with the greatest enemy in American history because Putin is "strong" and cares about Russia (when he isn't robbing the country blind) . That's really, really, poor reasoning for anything.
It's not my reasoning, Zippy. I'm not sure what part of "I agree with you but this is what other people seem to think" you're having difficulty with but your failure to understand the concept that I can hold one view and still explain another is making this conversation unnecessarily difficult.
Pepe is a nazi because some white supremacist put a Hitler mustache on him once, and for some reason the Clinton campaign thought it would be advantageous if they announced that pepe was officially a hate symbol. Big surprise, this turns out not to have been the most effective strategy for dealing with Trump.
Russians are nazis because according to a super official Washington Post journalist who talked to a super official US intelligence agent, there are super official top secret CIA documents detailing the hacking of the Election Computer Database 2017 by Russia, making it so Donald Trump would win the election. And to be fair, the CIA really are the supreme authority here, given their extensive experience meddling in the elections of foreign democracies. And if that wasn't proof enough, as we see here Russia has no qualms using the known hate symbol "pepe the frog" in their official twitter communications.
Honestly Hillary Clinton saved this meme. This meme was dying until she Streisand Effected the meme to record heights. Now this meme prolly won't die for anther 8 years.

n/a sadrice 2017-01-09
The ADL's list of hate symbols has to be taken in context. They are not saying that Pepe is only a racist symbol, just that it has been used as one. Just like the swastika is not only a nazi symbol, but to deny the association would be idiotic. Similarly, the Wolfsangel has a long history of being a heraldic symbol, boundary marker, lucky icon, and symbol of Germanic heathenry and the Church of Satan. It's also a nazi symbol.
n/a i_cant_get_fat 2017-01-09
I didn't say it's only racist and neither do they. Thanks for clarifying though. No harm in that. Swastika = symbol in multiple cultures as well.
n/a sadrice 2017-01-09
Yeah, sorry, didn't mean to imply that, but I've seen a lot of hate for the ADL for being over sensitive about this sort of stuff before. Frankly, I think the ADL is a little oversensitive, but given the history of the Jewish people, I can hardly blame them.

I don't know what you're thinking. Pepe has always been an white nationalist symbol on par with Klan robes, burning crosses, and swastikas, and we've always been at war with Eastasia.
n/a cimarafa 2017-01-09
Like 90% of commenters are Donald supporters. There are even a few altright race war people therez
n/a TheCodexx 2017-01-09
They like being able to find a reason to hate someone or something, and "this person did or said something that can be misconstrued to make them a literal Nazi" is an easy way to feel good about dehumanizing them and crapping all over them.
In short, some people started to feel bad about crapping on people online, so they started looking for an excuse to not feel bad. Which I don't understand: if you want to mock someone online, mock them; you just look like a retard if you have to justify it.
n/a i_cant_get_fat 2017-01-09

n/a TheChtaptiskFithp 2017-01-09
It's a 4chan thing so they confuse it with being a white nationalist thing (understandable tbh)
n/a Mystic8ball 2017-01-09
People say that /pol/ is what made Pepe a "White nationalist symbol", if you ask me it's all these retarded reporters insisting that it's a hate symbol. Honestly most of the Nazi Pepe stuff was made just to piss off the people who were claiming that it was being co-opted or someshit.
Like sure, some pepes are racist. But Pepe itself isn't.
I want to go back to a simpler time when Pepe was slitting Wojacks throat and shitting down it.

n/a rdramathrowaway6969 2017-01-09
No, the internet is great. What we need is a new system in which internet access is limited to only some people.
n/a mattypotatty 2017-01-09
Which people?
n/a rdramathrowaway6969 2017-01-09
I'm devising a system with a sort of tiered access. Children have certain access to academic, scholastic and education content, with limited "entertainment" categories, and "adults" between 18-25 require aptitude tests and licenses to access their own tiers. Certain content is available to all, but some of it needs to be curated to certain ages and intelligence/knowledge levels.

n/a DonaldBlythe 2017-01-09
Nah I have no problems with Pepe. Just that it's disappointing to see everyone ride the cock of the Kremlin.
n/a jubbergun 2017-01-09
Sadly, without any examples of real strength to point to many people are making that mistake.
n/a DonaldBlythe 2017-01-09
China's philosophy in increasing its power is entirely different than Russia's.
n/a jubbergun 2017-01-09
That's nice, dear, but 90% of it has little or nothing to do with what I said. I think Putin's pretty fucking terrible, just like you. I was just explaining why other think he's peachy-keen.
n/a DonaldBlythe 2017-01-09
Your reasoning is that our allies are somehow "weak" (they aren't) because you don't like Germany's immigration policy (most of the hate towards it isn't based in reality) therefore we should be friends with the greatest enemy in American history because Putin is "strong" and cares about Russia (when he isn't robbing the country blind) . That's really, really, poor reasoning for anything.
n/a jubbergun 2017-01-09
It's not my reasoning, Zippy. I'm not sure what part of "I agree with you but this is what other people seem to think" you're having difficulty with but your failure to understand the concept that I can hold one view and still explain another is making this conversation unnecessarily difficult.
n/a DonaldBlythe 2017-01-09
Well whoever has that reasoning (even if it's not you) is (at best) really ignorant of the situation.
