Ironically, actual mass ethnic cleansing in Kosovo didn't start happening until NATO started bombing, until then it was just a dirty little war.
But really, what it showed was that the much-vaunted "territorial integrity over all" post ww2 mindset was more like "territorial integrity when convenient!". There were other solutions to the Kosovo crisis, from federalization to international peacekeeping/monitoring. Forcibly changing Serbian borders was a choice we made, as much to demonstrate our post Cold War power as anything.
So yeah, now Russians rub our noses in that shit on Crimea. Sure Ukrainians didn't have a genocide in the works for Crimeans. But then again Serbians didn't either. And one thing that's obvious was that Crimeans were happy and eager to leave, so there is even a bit of a freedom boner to the whole thing.
