seriously though, republicans only need to control one more state government and they could theoretically pass a constitutional amendment and have it ratified with little resistance.
Yeah, but California relies on other states for much of its water, plus there's not a lot of manufacturing going on here, so we also rely on other states for certain goods as well. It just wouldn't be a smart move to go to war with the rest of America just to become our own state.
Trying to break the Union with secession is a quick way for California to learn what Posse Comitatus protects against. It's not going to happen, but if Cali wants to see real fascism trying to secede will usher that in real quick.
That's the thing. So they want to leave because they believe that america is going to become a nazi dictatorship any second.
So what they want is to become a small, defenseless country...immediately adjacent to a nazi dictatorship. Sounds like a great idea guys! You've clearly thought this one through.
I think in the normal framing one might assume that the two Californias would be north and south, though to have a real political difference it would be east/west

have started a sub that is having a collective teenage eye roll and temper tantrum because things didn't go their way during the election. Should we laugh at them or pity them or a little bit of both?
I remember when Texas saber-rattled about secession a few years back because Obama did something they didn't like. Then Obama welcomed them to secede, but informed them that air traffic in to and out of Texas would halt and Texas shut up and sat down.
The interesting thing is that Texas actually does have the resources to secede while California would wither and die because they don't have enough water to survive. Yes, I'm aware of the ocean, but desalinization on the scale needed to support their population doesn't exist.

You're oversimplifying a complex situation to the point of adding nothing to the discussion.

Too bad they're stuck in Mexico now that you got Stump'd

Build a wall around Cali instead of Mexico. Then we can attack them and turn the entire place into oil fields and farms for us to exploit.
n/a AntiLuke 2017-01-30
If you build a wall around California Oregon would pay for it, no joke.

I think once things settle down you'll end up with relatively free movement between the Bear Republic and Cascadia...

If they want independence, they will have to go to war with the rest of the U.S. Simple petitions won't do shit.

california could do desalinization right? pump up the water from the ocean and extract the salt (not that they have a deficit in salt, but w/e).
n/a veggiezombie1 2017-01-30
We could, but we don't. I have no idea why.
n/a presidenttrump_2016 2017-01-30
I don't think we have the stomach for outright war to put down rebels anymore.
However, we do have the stomach for sanctions and blockades. And California would surrender immediately after Internet access was cut off.

To be fair if any administration would go full Lincoln it's this one.
n/a RedditMeltsOverTrump 2017-01-30
you mean water access from arizona
n/a presidenttrump_2016 2017-01-30
Don't even need to go that strong. California imports a lot electricity.
n/a LemonScore 2017-01-30
Actually, I think the rest of the US would be on board with all the liberals moving to California and the state being granted independence.

Do the Chinese Communists ever do that "we gotta protect our co-ethnics" thing that Putin likes to do?

Yeah, but they aren't the easiest and undefended route to France, so they might be able to pull a sweden or Switzerland.
