To be fair, he has been in several movies, produced a record or two, and he was on several TV shows. He might not be the most talented or best known, but according to any popular definition today he is an artist. Oh, and he "Cannon is now the chairman of TeenNick for Nickelodeon and the development and creative consultant of the network since 2009" according to wikipedia.

Disagree. There's a dumb tendency out there to conflate being an artist with being a performer and/or a content creator. They're not equivalent.

If anyone who performs or creates anything is an artist the word has no meaning.

I'll take the socratic bait. This is subjective and imprecise and I don't expect you to agree, but to me an artist is a creator with a certain (high) level of skill and craftsmanship, not necessarily with a mastery of the field but with a great degree of competence in it earned through diligent hard work. Just because someone acts I wouldn't call them an artist, just because someone performs I wouldn't call them an artist, just because someone writes I wouldn't call them an artist, just because someone designs I wouldn't call them an artist, just because someone composes I wouldn't call them an artist, etc.

A Kathy Griffin is not on the same plane as a Toni Servillo, a Brando, a Christian Bale, so on.
