I'd go with your first instinct: that is the loathing one. I'm stunned anyone can go to the US 117 times and sing its virtues. Many horrible people seem nice until you get to know them. Ted Bundy was thought of as a nice bloke by those that he didn't try to rape and murder. The immigration officials you encountered were the real America. The ones that have destroyed the middle east for financial gain, and then despise those looking to escape the very mess the US created. And I'm not limiting this comment to recent wars. Look at their disgraceful conduct in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, amongst many others (and that's just the middle east leaving out of account places like Chile, Panama, Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc, etc) over the last 100 years. The US exports the philosophy of "he who dies with the most toys wins" and plays that tune to its ultimate cruel abstraction for the benefit of a few privileged souls.
