So typically I don't comment on news posts because I don't to care to argue with people that get triggered over every damn thing.

Well, today, I guess I was the one who got triggered.

So it started with this comment by someone who compared being a famous athlete with slavery. I'm a low class, unprivileged girl pretty low on the totem pole so it brought out my inner SJW. I think? Or is it my inner conservative? Which side of identity politics is thought policing at this point? At this point I feel like both sides are fighting for the vapid role of oppression and today, I will admit I am no different.

Anyways, I didn't really care about the flag nonissue. Just really the misuse of the word slave.

At the risk of sounding sanctimonious- a little bit of some SJW backstory, I am pretty passionate about the rights of workers overseas who are not entitled to the same rights as those in first world countries. I am strict about the products I buy and companies I support because the thought of humans being exploited and having their lives ruined at the expense of others disturbs me. And human trafficking is a real problem that affects people even in the states.

Anyways, back to the word slave- Captain Something or other so eloquently defines for us here.

So this was my reply. I honestly didn't think I'd start a shit storm. I think it went against the grain and everyone assumed I picked a side they didn't like. So you have everything in this thread from personal insults about my position in my company and this gem that declares opposing the misuse of the word slave means that actually you oppose warranted and reasonable criticism. You know, if you're not with us, you're against us.

At this point I said fuck it. I didn't give a fuck about the anthem thing before but suddenly I was like "whatever these jerks are against is probably a good thing". So I said stuff like this where if you're playing for a national team in front of other countries you'd look dumb sitting out of the national anthem with your team and you'd be an embarrassment. Also if you hate America so much you can't stand for a total of 2 minutes quit your job.

Everyone lost their collective shit. Accusations of who's stifling free speech thrown around. My side or Captain Slave's side. Should everyone quit? Should everyone sue? Is America turning into north Korea for the actions of a private bussiness? Do military service members have more self expression rights than professional athletes?

I think the ironic thing is, is that I was fucking pissed this is what people were pissed about. Fucking this. Where no US soccer player has even sat out the national anthem but oh fuck what if it were to happen? So here I am, participating in the same circle jerk about free speech, having my free speech denied while I also denied others of their free speech and their right to use the word slave however they god damned pleased.

Anyways, this is what I hate about politics. I think it brings out the worst in people, on either side. And as long as both sides of an issue are just sitting around fighting about an issue, there won't be a resolution.

See, I could have written a passionate post about human trafficking in the time I spent arguing about the actual meaning of human trafficking.

But I didn't. And that's how we all are.
