I know I fell into the math side mostly because I was further up in math and so my physics courses were more boring.
Basically this. I'm much more math, as it turned out. It's a little iffy, because this has been true for every class except Quantum stuff, which is very mathematical, and my intro QM class I'm doing quite well in.
From my experience, askphilosophy is pretty receptive to discussion on topics the hivemind has strong opinions about, and badphilosophy has a tendency to just smugly circlejerk and not say anything meaningful.
I wanted to say that anti-realists don't believe that an act can be moral or immoral, i worded it badly and English is not my first language, and btw I don't post in badphil because I know almost nothing.
Ever been there? It's not right wing and it's not anti-intellectual. It's a huge circlejerk like every sub but it's a left-wing one and it's against anti-intellectualism.
Currently there's a debate about the daily discussion thread. Since the election (there was a poll btw that showed that almost all users backed Clinton) it's been full of political shitposting against Trump. Haven't seen even one pro-Trump voice yet. I like it that way tbh but the discussion is about the new rule that allows political shitposting only on Wednesdays because it got out of hand.
Should I submit this comment to /r/badphilosophy because you assumed that noncognitivist moral anti-realism is the only kind of moral anti-realism that exists,
Hahahaaaa wat? Not to put words in Tratt's mouth (eh, fuck it), but I'm pretty sure that when s/he talks about badphil users 'fighting bad philosophy', s/he probably doesn't mean that these events take place in the badphil sub. In fact, doing so tempts the wrath of the banhammer. The 'fighting of bad philosophy' tends to happen in the context in which an example of bad philosophy arises, and downvoting in such a context is overwhelmingly frowned upon. I mean, we wouldn't want to hide the instructive refutations of bad philosophy, would we? Of course not.
It's a boring, whiny subreddit filled with self important wannabe academics and "scholars" compared to r/drama.
Self important wannabe psychologist comes to mind.
how Sam Harris is some evil figure
He's viewed as less of an evil figure, and more of an oblivious charlatan, really.
how all atheists ratheists on Reddit are fat, fedora neckbeards should learn the standard definitions of atheism and agnosticism before talking about either position
Are you really gonna say that there is 0 looking down on the average person on BP?
I will. There really isn't any of that, unless by 'the average person' you mean 'the kind of person who makes blind assertions about x topic of philosophy but clearly doesn't know shit about shit, and is arrogant on top of that'.
Except a couple of mods like /u/atnorman shitgestein and /u/cmmulligan, who to be fair are usually easy going and light hearted, most of the prople there are beyond vitriolic. Just check that laotzuwhatever guy, he is the definition of butthurt cunt and more or less the rest of the lurkers and a couple of mods are like him.
we get annoyed because philosophy is the most abused of the subjects
No shit dude. Why would you expect different? This is what I dont get, that it actually bothers you people ignorance about philosophy.
Philosophy isnt taught in high school, philosophers popularisers are terrible at it, a decent amount of philosophy teachers suck, philosophy is very abstract with none to little immediate pleasure involved, the job market is fucked, society doesnt care about that kind of knowledge, etc ...
Plus, you have to form opinions about it just by living. In the moment you make a moral choice, like eating meat, you already have an opinion about something related to philosophy. So people have no choice but to have an opinion about something that they were not taught about and know jack shit. To laugh at them for it, specially in a vitriolic way is ridiculous. Most people dont even know what philosophers do, and for them is a heavy shock to discover that whatever opinion that they holded as sacred, especially morality related ones, are wrong.
Ofc they are going to be defensive about it!
That is why I said that u all ( again excluding some ) give an elitist and vitriolic vibe.
It's pretty obvious what he means though. Presumably he thinks askphilosophy doesn't circlejerk about moral superiority, even if they both share the top mod.
Where are you getting this notion that badecon is right wing, or anti-intellectual? Like. This whole comment reads like someone who's exercising some weird grudge.

Hah, the PM I just received from him is pretty funny:
I think I like it here. I think I'll stop in again sometime and tick off the butthurt teenagers.

"Exploitation" as a Marxist concepts depends on the concept of surplus value, not the LTV.

They're making fun of anti-intellectual Taleb because he's a bit of an idiot.
Most users are extremely anti-Trump and pro-immigration.
Honestly it's one of the more leftist subs of reddit.
