i have a hunch video hosting is still not actually profitable, thus every competitor being so incredibly minor-league, thus them not having to actually have a good website
Can someone give me a TL:DR on why annotations are a good thing? I hate them. Turning them off is always one of the first things I do when I'm configuring a new youtube account. A lot of channels use them like pop-up ads. They are distracting and annoying IMO.
I dunno, it depends on the kind of video. For the most part they are sadly getting used as you describe, but I can imagine that for someone who goes into the intricacies of 14th century polearms for half an hour and totally missed during editing that one time he accidentally called a fauchard a glaive, it can be useful putting a little text box correcting the mistake there instead of having to reedit or reupload the video. Or just having some kind of "further information"-link to an external website there instead of buried in the description (I even occasionally click on those). But I don't know how these "cards" the OP talks about work, are those these little white boxes that sometimes pop up in the top right corner during videos?
Allow for interactive video so.on a tutorial they can say "if you ready know this step skip to x" then the annotation will time skip to the correct part.
If you put out a video and something turns out to be wrong, you can give a quick correction acknowledging the mistake and lowering the amount of "YOU GOT THIS WRONG" comments.
Yeah I don't know what that was. I was super drunk and tried to mix two jokes....obviously it just turned out shitty. I'll leave it up though because it's stupid and this is /r/drama

It's astonishing that Youtube manages to only make its lay-out worse and worse.

Nothing better than a drunken shitposting spree.
My last one netted me a gilding, so whatever.
