Calling Bill Clinton and Al Gore neoliberal is a fair characterisation, I think. Less so for Obama and Hillary.
I mean who even considers himself to be a "neoliberal"
Yeah, I think it's a pretty meaningless term at this point. I imagine that subreddit attracts centre-left "third way" advocates more than free market Reaganite types, though, so it makes sense that they would claim Obama as one of their own.
Not to belabor the point, but Libertarians assume society without or almost without any Government needing to regulate or prescribe economic or any other relationship.
Since all of the malign racism that exists in US is manufactured by the Government and thus referred to as institutional, people cannot think Libertarian ideas through without removing any notion of the Government.
When it comes to individual vs. Collective, Libertarians are sitting on the furthest point of that spectrum while Communists are on the other, equally deluded how society should function.
That's some of the racism, a very small and circumspect part if you limit yourself to what exists today. Most of the extant institutional racism is not codified in any laws or statutes but is a result of individual prejudices combining into large scale properties of social institutions. You'll still see hiring managers discriminate against candidates, and police officers shooting black suspects even if police were privatized (which neoliberals very pointedly do not want by the way).
Since all of the malign racism that exists in US is manufactured by the Government and thus referred to as institutional, people cannot think Libertarian ideas through without removing any notion of the Government - in Libertarian utopia there is no Government so there's nobody to prevent racism but also, to institutionalize it.
What I meant is this β theoretically speaking, when Libertarians espouse property rights they imagine it in a world not inhabited by institutionalized racism because object of their analysis is relationship between a property and individual right to manage property in any way property owner wants it because it is considered basic freedom, a basic tenet of Libertarianism. That include refusing service for whatever reason including skin colour.
In other words, they arrive at a situation that in the real world, inhabited by real people and with a Government whose elements include institutionalized racism is understood to be racist.
Therefore, due to a metal trigger effect in such mental context, such idea - refusing service for whatever reason is basic tenet of liberty β is considered racist even though Libertarian intention was not to be racist β just exercising potential right to refuse service for any reason including skin colour.
I personally think such perception is unfair because for a theory such as Libertarianism to be consistent, application of basic tenet of property rights is without exception.
But, I guess, drama is lack of communication and trolling is intent to miscommunicate.

Always have... He's literally one of their foundational thinkers. He taught at their central intellectual hive, the University of Chicago.
Neoliberals are just libertarians who like feminism. That's all there is to it.

That's factually incorrect.

Yes. He's dope. Unfortunately co-opted by a bunch of idiots that have no idea what he actually stood for, but that's how the wind blows.

christ fuck this online millenial tendency of confusing "neoliberal" with "moderate Democrat," they are not the same thing goddamn it

Neoliberalism is a leftist meme. The only context the word is used in these days is derogatory. Nobody identifies as neoliberal.
n/a darkaceAUS 2017-03-30
That's where you're wrong kiddo

Seems like everyone hates neoliberals these days and looking at that thread it's easy to see why.

Jim Crow - Government
CIA selling crack coacine to fund Latin wars - Government
Southern strategy - Government
ID and other lwas to supress voting - Government
Hundreds of thousands of people in jail for small offences - Government
Three strikes - Government
I can do this all day...

So Jim Crow was something White Southerners didn't authentically want, but were only "manufactured" into supporting by the government. OK.
n/a newcomer_ts 2017-03-30
Doesnβt matter what a bunch of rednecks authentically wanted β thereβs something called Bill of Rights.
Until Government manufactures it into a law β itβs just thatβ¦ a bunch of rednecks.
n/a EvanHarper 2017-03-30
Yeah this is just incoherent babble with no relationship to the point being discussed.
