Everyone virtue signals, it's just the nature of the virtues are different. Whenever we do anything that communicates our values in one way or another - that's virtue signalling.
God that phrase is so retarded. You hear that, /u/jimmy_three_shoes? Fucking retarded.
Nah virtue signaling is definitely a unique emergent phenomenon in current culture. It's stronger than normal.
I was watching Jerry Seinfeld's weird online show with the cars a little while ago where he was interviewing Will Ferrel. Farrell: "I'm interviewing for schools with my son who is in sixth grade. He says things like 'I like the inclusive nature of your school. I like what your mission statement says.' I'm like who is this kid?"
Shit like this wasn't happening when I was in sixth grade let alone further back in the 60s or such.
The older I get the more true that becomes sigh. I'm old enough to have heard that one during its original showing, and it seemed like prophecy even then.
Nothing drives it home like dating an 18 year old once every few years, too. Despite what people seem to think there is still tons of common ground and you can really enjoy each other's company - but she's not going to think you're very cool lmao.
Ferrell: "I'm interviewing for schools with my son who is in sixth grade. He says things like 'I like the inclusive nature of your school. I like what your mission statement says.' I'm like who is this kid?"
There is a huge difference between whatever (((liberal elite))) rich pampered school Ferrell's kid goes to and normal public schools.
I'm not sure I agree that it's stronger than normal. The internet has made people's opinions more visible to a larger audience which comes with increased criticism. And since virtue signalling is a buzz word now, people are increasingly labelling opinions with it.
Virtue signalling has been around for a long time. See:
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
In 1970 Tom Wolfe wrote about "radical chic" and the wealthy Manhattanites who liked to throw parties for the Black Panthers.
The form of virtue signalling and the ways in which people virtue signal certainly change through history, but it's far from a "unique emergent phenomenon in current culture."
I will literally beat to death the next person I meet in real life that uses the phrase: "Deal with it"
Not even joking, just going to bury them in the fucking woods. Probably make them dig their own grave and tell them to deal with it. "Life isn't what you thought it would be, huh sweetie? -sips tea-"
When Sharon Shamblaw was diagnosed last summer with a form of blood cancer that could only be treated with a particular stem cell transplant, the search for a donor began. A Toronto hospital, 100 miles east of her home in St. Mary's, Ontario, and one of three facilities in the province that could provide the life-saving treatment, had an eight-month waiting list for transplants.
Four months after her diagnosis, Shamblaw headed to Buffalo, New York, for treatment. But it was too late. She died at the age of 46, leaving behind a husband and three children
Numerous donors were a match with Laura and ready to donate, but Hamilton's Juravinski Hospital didn't have enough beds in high-air-pressure rooms for the procedure.
Hospital staff told her they had about 30 patients with potential donors, but the means to only do about five transplants a month.
Our healthcare's pretty great - not without its issues, and there are certainly ways in which it could be improved, but I'd rather have our system than America's.
Funny how the virtue signaling, horseshoe theory, cultural marxists insist all those terms don't make any sense, when a cursory glance at shitholes like r/badhistory prove this email theories.
Whenever you see someone getting upset about the term social justice warrior (and its acronym) on reddit they're very likely to post in one of the SJW subs.
It's ridiculous. Just wear the shitty badge with pride instead of claiming you do not exist.
Virtue signaling isn't about discrediting actual advocacy or empathy or respect. The term is used to describe people who talk a big talk but don't actually give a shit about anything but looking like a nice, progressive person.
Seems reasonable, I gue-
Oh yeah, I'm literally Hitler because I don't want to share a bathroom with someone who looks like a man. Give me a break. That isn't "mocking and belittling" trans people. You presume an awful lot about who I am.
I do think you're right that being rejected by family and peers plays a huge role in why so many more LGBT people are suicidal. I just don't agree that I'm part of that problem because of my feelings regarding bathroom use.
/u/gazork_chumble_spuzz, were you molested in a bathroom by an ugly lady in the 11 or so hours in between those posts, or something?

Honestly, calling people out for virtue signaling is virtue signaling.

this means you are also a virtue signaler?

It's virtue signaling all the way down

I heard the Boy Scouts were introducing a "Virtue Signaling" merit badge as an updated version of the Signaling Merit Badge.

Only centennial merit badge I didn't get. :(

There was other shit, you just didn't see it. In the 60s, for example, signalling patriotism was extremely common.
n/a SamWhite 2017-04-04
I used to be with it. But then they changed what 'it' was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

You realize that's not a joke right? As in, there's no punch line, it's just a line from a character literally from the show The Simpsons.
Though it makes sense that a humorless individual like yourself would misconstrue that line as a full joke.

Oh boy, another person who thinks Canada has great healthcare. That's how you know you're dealing with a dummy!
n/a Fagadaba 2017-04-04
What's wrong with Canada's healthcare?
n/a Axylon 2017-04-04
I mean, sometimes it takes a while to get in to see a doctor if its not a serious issue, but over all our heathcare is pretty good.
Not perfect mind you, there is always room for improvement, but its hardly bad.
n/a SovietWarfare 2017-04-04
You mean 20 weeks for something medically necessary, or the 40 for an elective? But hey, don't take my word for it, take all the Canadians who liked our system better for some reason. Hell, even your politicians go to America. But hey mate, people in bad shape are moved to the front of the line, or so I'm told.
Was she moved ahead of the line?
This leukemia patient dies waiting for a hospital bed to open up.
Was she moved ahead of the line?
Sure, you could counter that healthcare is expensive in the US. Except, of course, if you have health insurance which will normally cover most of the bill. I should note that only 9% of Americans aren't covered (because they opted out).
Here Martin Shkreli talks about why healthcare in the US is perceived as high, stating as insurers foot the bill. (later in the talk, I recommend watching the whole thing. His talk is at Harvard)
This is just my gripe with it of course.
n/a Fagadaba 2017-04-04
Are you seriously saying that the US has better healthcare, in general, than Canada?

n/a SovietWarfare 2017-04-04
Because of insurance. It covers most of the bill and we get better care.
