They tried to turn into a "social" image host and failed horribly. They had some killer features (download whole albums as a zip, 200mb file limits), but slowly got rid of everything that people liked about them and replaced it with features such as alerts if people geographically near you had uploaded images...
Gross. All this altering of uploaded images is what made me just start using my own. Chevereto + whatever host they're bundled with at the time, cheap and easy to setup. The software isn't too horrible either.
You're assuming "geotag" info is all that's contained in the exif metadata, when that's not at all why I'm interested in it. I don't even use my cell to take pictures, never mind uploading them to public image hosts.
In my hobby the iptc metadata contains information related to the image such as the photographer, copyright, event descriptions, who is in the image, what city it was taken in, and lots more.
Not defending imgur, but I'm having trouble understanding the problem with it.
I mean, maybe if you're a pleb and don't have image hover you see the web page. However, for non-plebs like me I just hover over the image. Imgur's servers aren't shit so they load fast making it good in my book. My only problem with imgur is their dumbass gifv format, which is essentially a shitty form of webm because it doesn't allow controls.
Yeah anyone who doesn't browse with something like Imagus or one of the other common hoverzooms (especially on a site like reddit) is going through a lot more trouble than they should be.
But there are no hoverzooms for mobile, and that's where imgur is particularly a pain in the ass. Also the stripping exif, recompressing, and resizing huge images, that's pretty bad for an image host to do by default. Fine for pics you don't care about, don't store your family picture albums on it for safe keeping though cause you won't get back the same thing that you uploaded.
I think the stripping exif, recompressing, and resizing huge images stuff is all a pretty reasonable design choice given the site's primary intended use.
I make a lot of use of image hosts daily, and almost none of the most common ones do. Actually off the top of my head imgur is the only one I can think of that does.
It sure is nice when you forget to strip geodata in one of your export presets and accidentally upload some nudes with your address up for grabs. Thank you tumblr that one time - and thank you mr creepy guy who warned us without being too creepy.
I mean, the flipside is that you have to ask people for their camera settings if you're curious, but on balance I think it's worth it.
Imgur is almost unusable for mobile these days, especially for gifs. About a quarter of the time I have to open it in browser and reload several times before it'll work.
It occasionally has so many fucking redirects I'm starting to avoid imgur links altogether.
Here is a little secret friendorino. Image hosting makes zero money, its a shit way to make money. That's why all image hosters turn shitty because once they get big enough they realize why the previous big image hoster "sold out", because its either put up annoying ads or close the site. Then the next newbie comes in and says "i can make it better", then they get big enough, have to shit up the site with annoying ads and the cycle continues.
Absolutely. I've got 10 times longer loading time just to see a jpeg, and gifs are made to force you visit the site, can't link them directly on fb. Worst hosting place simply because it's so popular.
There is a regular complaint, that shows up again in the linked thread, like "r/nyc does not reflect on real NYC because there are racists on r/nyc" and I don't think those people have been to real NYC.
"This is reminiscent of the issues /r/Seattle faced, and the lot of us moved over to /r/SeattleWA. Moderator incompetency and egotism is truly incredible to witness."
...the fuck do you need to follow both the NYC and Seattle subreddit for?

Imgur is a fucking awful image host though. Whatever happened to that min.us?

imgtc has been doing the job for me, it's super-minimalist.
n/a felsoul 2017-04-08
Does it auto-resize, strip exif, or recompress the way imgur does?
n/a zahlman 2017-04-08
Haven't properly tested those yet.
n/a Nomadlads 2017-04-08
/u/felsoul I just tested it. It strips geotagging. It also compressed a 1.32 MB photo to 738 KB.

I mean, I'd rather an image host did strip geotagging, tho, for privacy reasons. Who actually uses that info?

Leaving EXIF intact is a really bad idea unless you like everybody knowing everything about everyone.
n/a Elmepo 2017-04-08
Most image hosts strip exif.

.gifv has controls. You just have to right click and hit "show controls". If you're not a total newfag pleb you use RES, which has built in controls.

Get a better app. Sync for Reddit handles all that shit in-app. It's only kinda bad for albums with a ton of text.

The mod is right, though. Imgur has become a pile of shit over the years. It's pretty much on the tier of everything it was written to replace.

/r/nyc is exactly like nyc. Full of obnoxious personalities trying to deal with depression and anger by making passive-agressive remarks.
That's a compliment.

Nyc has top banter. I lived in most of european metropolis but i've never seen :
-people paying to play chess to be thrashtalked to and robbed 5$
-your 50yo driver doing nearly a stroke just by yelling at the traffic
-Women and men being equally agressives verbaly. Don't piss a 40yo working woman in a suit folks.
-witnessing some 15 yo btfoing someone twice their age only by trash talking.
Pure savagery.
Tfw no manhattan millionaire gf, why even live ?

I don't know. imgur has been sucking lately.
There's really no reason not to just use the reddit built in image host.

to be fair, imgur has been getting shitty in the past year or two.
