Does the BBC not have any employee under the age of 70? No one thought this angle was silly? I'd rather quit my job than put my name on something so embarrassing.
Then the perfect ending. Seemingly, the only person with a presence on social media in the whole video; A black girl saying 'It's funny'. Yeah.
Yeah, but do you know what it means? Do you know what it fucking means
In 2016 politically and racially charged memes started spreading from UK and US accounts
I don't know about you, but I've seen political memes before 2016. Racist ones too. And what 'accounts'? Are they talking about twitter? In that case they could make it a bit clearer.
In November 2016 their (far-right activists) activities stopped.
Again, I don't know if they're talking about some specific Twitter users? Maybe a screenshot would be nice? This is the only new information and they are so vague.
False notion about lactose intolerance
It's true that non-whites are lactose intolerant to a much higher degree. Why do they have to deny that? I wasn't about to start hating Asians because some can't drink milk.
Pepe became popular in 2016
This would be so easy to double check with 1 google search.
The interview with the Frenchie alt-right strategist was pretty interesting. I wish there was more, I wish it was only that.
The interview with the Black girl annoys me the most though. She obviously saw some pretty funny Pepes. That's all it means. It doesn't mean anything. If she saw racist Pepes she wouldn't have said that.
The question carries this fucked up implication. 'Little Nubian princess... Although you are strong, brave and fierce your inferior Nubian intellect has barred you from seeing this obvious racist attack'.
Now she's gonna think 'I wonder what this means' the next time she sees a Pepe. That's not a fulfilling life. Never take political memes 100% seriously, it's autistic.
It's true that non-whites are lactose intolerant to a much higher degree. Why do they have to deny that? I wasn't about to start hating Asians because some can't drink milk.
If I'm remembering the words correctly they wrote something like "This is based on the false notion that all non-whites are lactose intolerant" which is so tone-deaf that so have to believe it was done on purpose. Reminds me of someone talking about Muslims' cumskins' proportionately larger support for certain types of stupid shit being met with the idiotic rejoinder "But not all Muslims mayos are terrorists need to be shot!"
Now she's acting smug about putting out some of the worst pieces of journalistic work I've ever seen. At least put out something about it being rushed or lacking funds.
I don't think I've ever been this angry over inane bullshit internet drama before. I'm glad I don't have Twitter, because I'd go after that fucking bitch.
goes back to tea & successful life The worst part is she's right. She's got a secure job with one of the most prestigious media companies in the world. I've got an empty, unsuccessful, depressing life and I am out of milk. Fuck you Megha, you don't deserve happiness.
people these days your age (I assume because you are a redditor) change careers all the time. If you are unhappy, try out something new! I know it seems scary, but it's better to try and fail than to be empty and depressed.
I'm not denying that at all. It's a really interesting subject too. This American Life did a great segment on the impact of Trumpist twitter. They actually interviewed people behind some alt-right accounts, asking about their motivations, asking about the sometimes questionable content. Is it just harmless trolling? What about if people get hurt? etc. It's not exactly brain surgery.
Yet, I've just watched a short documentary about the subject and come out less informed than I started out. They don't even suggest it's twitter we're talking about until the minute mark. Did they think I'd just get that? My first thoughts went to 4chan and maybe even t_d. 'Meme war on Twitter' is a better title.
Before that she's sitting with the juicy chatlogs from a secret alt-right member. She's just teasing though, never actually showing it. Doesn't even read an excerpt. Okay. Will this be in the finished documentary? Oh, that's all?
Then we get some actual information about something. Those symbols are news to some people I guess. Seems kind of irrelevant for the bigger picture though. Ask him about what he does, how he does it why he does it?? Nah, we're done with him.
Then some quick false info about Pepe. Good. Now there are some actually interesting slides; 'they co-ordinate on gaming forums'. Nice, how many are they? Are there leaders? How do they accomplish this? Have you infiltrated these forums? Show screenshots please. Nah, next. What's the connection between the Anglo alt-right and the French?
Is this supposed to be a multi-parter?
Corpse Paint have been used by a lot of nazi metal bands. The Swastika has been used by the Nazis. The novel format has been used to write a lot of far right novels.
'What do you think about novels?'
'I read a really funny one yesterday'
'Do you know the meaning behind them though? Didn't think that far did you? You probably read a far right novel without realizing it, thinking it was funny all along.'
The "milk meme" simply comes from a Shia LaBeouf/HWNDU trolls, who specifically find humor in taking innocuous things, linking them to Naziism, and then watching articles pour out and people twisting themselves to avoid these new "racist" things.
All in all she takes the whole "meme war" thing too seriously. A large portion of the people involved don't even care about the politics, they just like upsetting people for laughs.
They discovered during Trump's campaign that nothing caused more "butthurt" than Trump succeeding, that's why they seemed so unanimous in their support for him and kept churning out memes about Trump winning. The very idea of his success made people irrationally angry and the trolls savored it. It's only natural they're doing the same thing with LePen
I think that the profile of a BBC journalist is somebody who either went to private school or spent almost their entire teen years working to try to get into oxbridge and had little or no social life that most people would recognise (drinking, playing games for hours etc).
So there were in a kind of dull bubble to begin with, then they go to oxbridge and it's even more of a kind of dull bubble that has it's own very specific culture that is something of an anathema to irreverent internet culture. Then they go to the BBC which is full of people like them and try to relate stuff from popular (or semi popular) culture and it doesn't really work all that well. Also these people pretty much run culture in the UK for the most part.
It sounds weird when the media reports on internet culture because they're not autists who pride themselves on their knowledge of internet culture - and that's the majority of people that are watching this report
So at the start I was pretty sure that it's a montage parody style thing. Obviously, with feels guys firing rifles and stuff. Then there was the dramatic pan to a girl browsing webs on a notebook on a roof, and dramatic shaking on some forum posts, sure, usual montage parody things, expecting "oh baby a triple" any time. And then it just continued as a standard BBC documentary. My mind is full of fuck.
Yes, everything. It looks like a high school project.
And why the depressing yet urgent music at the end? It isn't that urgent or upsetting. I half expected a text with: '96 Pepes have been made since this was recorded'.
Dunno if native speakers of English feel the same way, but as someone working on not sounding like a 🇨🇦 🐸, Tristan Mendès's lack of accent is amazing. Sure, he pronounces "meme" and "millenial" and "Risitas" like a 🥖, but damn that's impressive fluency.
The etymology of "gene" and "meme" is largely Greek, "meme" was coined by Dawkins, and the internet speaks English. As far as I can tell, he should be pronouncing it differently but I'm not going to pretend I don't make mistakes on French-looking words.
Human beings have real, legitimate political beliefs which reflect underlying value systems, and we can benefit as a society by constructing our government in such a way that its behavior is based on these beliefs.
I can turn you into a neo-Nazi by showing you a cartoon frog.

That black people have darker skin than white people is based on the false notion that albinoism doesn't exist in Africa. So stupid.
