US interventionist policies affected Syria as early as the creation of Israel and more recently under President Bush when he named them as part of the axis of evil in 2002. Again under Bush we intervene in 2004 to put sanctions on Syria. There's some back and forth then under Obama we put sanctions on Syria again in 2010 due to terrorism links. In 2011 the civil war kicks off after the Syrian government kills it's own civilians. Shortly after both the US and the EU apply further sanctions. In 2012 Obama warns Syria chemical weapons would tilt the US into intervening directly. Dec 2012 the US, Turkey, Britain, and France recognise opposition as "legitimate representative" of Syrian people. 2013-2014 the UN is allowed to destroy Syrian chemical weapons stock after they're used to kill 300 people (no one is blamed for the attack by the UN.) In 2014 ISIS declares caliphate from Aleppo to Diyala and this starts US bombings in coordination with 5 other Arabic countries. In 2017, almost 3 years after the US started bombing ISIS, Trump targets the Syrian government directly over their usage of chemical weapons.
