They had their uses in the past but nowadays they're more or less a pest, and will multiply anywhere. Plus if you have other cell lines everything turns to shit when HeLa moves in you petri dishes.
In most labs that are too cheap and keep reusing the same HeLa lines passed down from postdoc to PhD to intern, they've mutated to shit. But they're cheap and there's a lot of data available on them. In a way it's like blacks vs mexicans : they're both bad, but one of them is better documented than the other, so we stick with the devil we know.

HEK293 cells are now prefererd because they're non-invasive cells that still grow extremely well. They're also generated from master race Dutch abortion material, which is always a good thing.
The best part about HeLa is that some lines seem to have evolved to be able to somehow survive better on most lab surfaces. That's what makes them so omnipresent and prone to contaminate everything.
I know that before high throughput sequencing was readily available, very few people even considered how much HeLa were floating around in every experiment they did.
I can't google a good account the accident, but it's also funny that HeLa cells polluted cell cultures that were exchanged between the USSR and USA in the 70s (in an effort to jointly advance cancer research despite the cold war) and it led people to believe it was some kind of sabotage (when it was just contamination).
