Maybe you focused on the good looking ones? What seems different to me in France is that it's supposed to be normal to be careful about your physical apperance and style. We have slightly higher standards there. So the nice looking people stand out even more.

Some regions are less skinny than other. Inside Paris and Lyon for instance you tend to find people that are socially better off than the average citizen. Which means less obesity and so on.
But nobody goes into the very bad regions for tourism anyway (and even in those places the interesting stuff in within bigger cities that are not too bad either).
Very simple : look at our last election, find places where Le Pen got a majority of the votes, you'll get a map of where people are fat, ugly, drunk and unemployed.
