They didn't actually "take" it, because cis/trans isn't chemistry specific, it's a generic prefix (Latin I believe) meaning "on this side/on the other side". Another example of cisalpine/transalpine Gaul. That wasn't stolen by or from chemistry, it's just different fields using similar language to express the same concept. Kind of like you can have "bicameral", "bisexual", "bipolar", and "binary" without any one of them being stolen from another.
Quit acting like you've ever taken a chemistry class, let alone organic chem. If you had, you would know that there's usually two semesters of gen chem before you get to that.
Imagine being as genuinely stupid as /u/P1rateP1kachu. Basic tasks such as holding a spoon or even simply gazing out a window must require near-Herculean strength.
I do actually agree with this. There's nothing inherently wrong with the word "cisgender", other than it sometimes being used as an insult. It just means the opposite of transgender. Intent matters.
Also straight and cis aren't even synonymous. Straight is about who you're attracted to, cis is about what gender you identify as. Saying "Call me straight, not cis" is like saying "call me a vegetarian, not a plumber". Besides, I'm not sure why being called cis is enough of an issue to get worked up about - I can't really see it being a regular occurrence unless your main social group consists of trans activists or something.

u/P1rateP1kachu only the mentally unstable and gender studies majors (basically the same thing) use the term cis for anything.

It's an actual scientific term that they took.

As a chemist, I used to always think about this every time someone used those terms.

do they just not teach basic chemistry in high school anymore? Or did you drop out?
n/a Elite_AI 2017-05-21
You have to take it as an A-level to learn about the cis-trans thing.
n/a neutralvoter 2017-05-21
it's not just cis-trans you dope it's a basic relationship of functional groups. Nomenclature is like the first chapter of any basic chem book.
n/a Elite_AI 2017-05-21
Nope, no functional groups either. Chemistry's just shells and the basics of polycarbons at GCSE.
n/a neutralvoter 2017-05-21
yeah that's why i retracted my statement.

How dare you.
