I'm not sure if that's the reason, but during one of the previous incidents a pack of wild trannies savaged a dude who was painting a limp bizkit graffiti over a graffiti calling the original shitstirring professor to resign.
Working in the timber industry and natural resource sector a long time in this state and I've had several run ins with their student body and alumni. I've got stories.
I'm generally a left-of-center dude and even I think that college needs to be immediately privatized or shut down.
The conservative talking point of "colleges are brainwashing centers" is mostly bullshit, but Evergreen insists on making it real.
Oh I love to bitch about greeners, so bear with my wall of text.
Background: Evergreen is a liberal arts college in WA. They don't grade. Instead you get a summary at the end of the term from your professor. Still with me? Because it gets dumber.
I'm pretty sure the only reason the state keeps it open is because it's disproportionately inhabited with out of state champagne socialists who dump in a ton of tuition dollars.
Anyway, about seven years ago I went back to college (not Evergreen) after working some shit jobs during the recession when I got out of the army. I majored in forestry because I prefer working outdoors and wanted a real job.
For those who don't know, forestry tends to be filled with utilitarian conservation types. Most of us end up in the timber industry in some capacity which is where I am today. The environmental sciences that Evergreen focuses on tend to be stuffed with filthy tree huggers preservationists who go to work for government, activist groups, or sit on the couch and smoke pot.
One of the requirements for a forestry degree is doing an internship that focuses on natural resources. I ended up getting a summer job with a contractor who sprayed herbicide on invasive species in riparian areas (swamps, streams) for state lands, tribes, and private lands.
I spent a shit load of time on a horrible reservation, which is why PK's noble savage bullshit is so amusing to me. Almost everybody on the crew was younger than me and from Evergreen. One guy was alright, just a dirty hippie, but we were both plant nerds, so I didn't mind working with him. One gal (let's call her "S") was about the worst stereotype of a college know it all hippie.
The contractor rented a house for these people to live in for the summer. I was close enough to the job sites, so I stayed at my home, thank god. I would have probably murdered these folks if I had to live with them. When I met S at the orientation BBQ, she was talking about how she was homeless and living in a tent. How she smoked soooooo much weed.
When she drove up to the house, she had a brand new Prius. First week on the job, I got invited over to smoke pot with the crew. She didn't even know how to use the carb on a bong.
She frequently bad mouthed my time in the military and bragged about how she flipped off soldiers at Ft. Lewis going across the Freedom Bridge. For those unaware, that's the walk they do before deployments, so some of those guys were seeing their families for the last time.
Said she was a vegetarian, despite eating meat once a week.
WA state requires some pretty hefty written tests for spraying pesticide. I already had the basic one from forestry school, but I needed to pass another one for spraying in aquatic environments. It's a lot of conversions and volume measurements. I was never good at math, but if you know basic geometry and fractions, it's really not that hard to pass. My boss paid the $60 and I passed the first time. ALL of the Evergreen students failed. Hippie guy passed it the second time. S failed it three fucking times, wasting almost $200. So she had to be supervised by one of us while spraying chemical at all times and took a reduction in wages.
She smelled. I don't think she ever washed her pants the entire summer.
Frequently talked about "when I used to be gay" (???)
Now about one of our supervisors, who had not one, but TWO degrees from Evergreen. She wasn't technically my boss since she was her own contractor, but I worked with her because my boss had a regular day job. We'll call her "J"
J ran an environmental consulting group that's well known in the timber sector because she's friends with lawsuit mills and lawyers that are constantly trying to fuck with the timber industry here.
I had always heard about people like this, but it's something else to actually meet people that don't just disagree with you, but want to see your entire industry and way of life burned to the ground.
J didn't like forestry. She didn't like the military or veterans. So that was two strikes against me on day one. She tried to get my boss to fire me on more than one occasion for bullshit reasons.
She always criticized the state and private timber industry, but never the tribe's forest practices, which are far worse than the state's regulation. Because I guess it's okay with the natives fuck the earth for some reason.
One time we were walking in a stream bank and I was talking with the others about land navigation in the army and she cut me off "you're not in Iraq anymore!" all pissed off.
J was so well known in this area that her name would immediately come up when I applied for other jobs after I graduated. I even applied for an environmental consulting group that was owned by a Vietnam vet and he hated her. He was ready to hire me on the spot. "If you can work with that lady, you can do anything."
I ended up doing another internship at a major timber company and was asked extensively about my time with her by the interviewing panel. They considered her a spy and wanted all the dirt. They asked if she should be allowed to spray on their land and I flatly said no.
One of my supervisors at this timber company had to work with her for some tribal issues on salmon passage and stream buffers.
I won't bore you too much with the details, but during timber sales, you have to set aside so many trees around fish bearing and non-fish bearing streams for water quality. They're a necessary evil, but they're a bitch and the regulations are murky.
Right now, the tree huggers have already won the spotted owl wars, so they're going after sediment on timber sales. J was obsessed with sediment in streams. She would actually cry during rain events when the rivers got muddy.
My boss told me that he flagged off a small buffer for a non-fish bearing stream one time and he came back the next day and caught her tribal employees dumb salmon fry into the stream with buckets in order to make the buffer larger and get the state involved.
When there's a disagreement over issues like this, people can call in the state to deliberate one what can be done. They bring in tribes, ecologists, timber people, loggers, wildlife folks, etc. The idea being that you can bring consensus with a bunch of groups with different objectives.
J didn't use them for this. She used them as a cudgel to try and stop timber sales. She'd cry and throw fits during them. It got so bad that even the state wouldn't bother with her requests anymore.
These people are fucking extremists of the worst kind and I'm rambling now. They don't give a fuck about people. They don't care about the science. They live in beautiful houses on large chunks of property and lecture folks like me on why we're raping the earth.
If you're gonna ask timber people about Evergreeners, be prepared for long-winded rants.
I'd also appreciate if their student body would quit vandalizing the contract loggers association building in Oly and monkey wrenching in Capitol Forest.
just kidding, i read all of it. Have you ever had fantasies about murdering those girls? Were they at least hot (apart from the pot smell)? And what i don't get is:
Right now, the tree huggers have already won the spotted owl wars, so they're going after sediment on timber sales. J was obsessed with sediment in streams. She would actually cry during rain events when the rivers got muddy.
Why did she cry? Rivers/streams get muddy all the time.
No. They were not hot and I've got a thing for cute hippie girls. She hardly bathed and never washed her clothes. Working in swamps during summer here is fucking gross.
The nice guy I mentioned had a wife who tagged along. She was also an Evergreen person. She would have been cute if it weren't for the shaved head, hairy legs, and weighing 90 pounds.
Why did she cry? Rivers/streams get muddy all the time.
Sediment run off in timber sales is a legitimate environmental problem, mostly because roads on tree farms were built 50-100 years ago when they didn't care about salmon or fish passage. There are ways to mitigate it, but enviros love to sue over it because they know it's expensive for landowners to take care of and the regulations and rules are a mess.
During the time I was working for this crew, there was a case in the courts (NRDC v. Decker) saying timber sales should be treated as point sources of pollution by the Clean Water Act. This would essentially make a clearcut on par with a coal fired power plant or a pulp mill. Nobody knew how it would be enforced. There was a real possibility that each timber sale would require an Environmental Impact Survey (which can take years). Even the EPA didn't want it because there wouldn't be enough resources in the world to enforce it. In WA, this was already on top of another program that was costing millions for fixing roads and culverts for salmon passage.
The 9th circuit said "yeah, this is a great idea!" of course. The Supreme Court rightly and unanimously said "lol. fuck no."
Even a lot of the greenies I knew were saying "this is an obvious abuse of the Clean Water Act."
Of course J thought it was a great idea because she knew it would be the final nail in the coffin of the entire timber industry. It's not about policy or science with these people. Zero compromise, just "fuck those redneck loggers."
Fucking hippies man, I listened to the Joe Rogan Experience podcast and I just can't believe that the professors "get to know" the students to grade them, are there no exams or nothing?
Seems like everyone's bent over a barrel to try and keep these kids happy.
Evergreen degrees are a fucking joke in my line of work. Mostly because it's for soft science bullshit like "environmental arts"
Their mascot is the geoducks, which is just being quirky to be quirky.
At least the hippie dude was going into evolutionary biology, which was actually interesting to talk about at work.
I'm hardcore SJW by this sub's standards, but I have my limits. These students were almost all from back east and had no idea what rural Washington was like. They constantly praised the natives for doing this invasive weed program (the grants were actually from the EPA), despite the fact the natives run their tree farms like shit.
Here's a photo of a stream on the rez right below a tree farm. It's hard to tell because it's a shitty pic, but that's a hemlock tree farm with no stream buffer. When they logged it, the whole side came tumbling down into the creek. No comment. But a little dirt in the water on private land? REEEE
This area used to be primarily old-growth cedar. Some of the stumps were 12' across. The tribes cut them all down for shake/shingle bolts years ago and replanted with Douglas-fir, which doesn't even like wet areas like that.
Trees stabilize slops and riparian areas. When you chop them all down by the water, you get erosion and landslides. The tribes don't have to deal the same regulations as private landowners, so they do what they want.
They don't give a fuck about people. They don't care about the science. They live in beautiful houses on large chunks of property and lecture folks like me on why we're raping the earth.
For sure, I see shit like The_Donald and get annoyed that the president is an international fucking embarassment, but then it's shit like Evergreen State that makes me yearn for Right Wing Death Squads.
