Isn't the ham radio community about independence and freedom of communication and the survivalist/prepper kinda deal? Why the fuck would they use an internet connected software that can be disabled by a company at anytime, and a proprietary one at that?
My grandfather had a ham radio set up back when a long distance phone call was a big deal. That was pretty cool. He talked to people in the USSR back when that was verboten.
Now, who the fuck needs a ham radio outside of those waiting for the apocalypse.
I don't think they "need" it. I suppose it's more of a hobby since p2p radio communication is cool. But it seems idiotic if you're going to have to pay $100 + $50/year to rent a proprietary software and connect to the internet to communicate over radio.
There are certainly prepper types and the fiercely independent, but it's not that narrow of a crowd because the license is actually pretty easy to get if you're the kind of person that would be into that thing. It just takes a bit of electronics knowledge and memorizing a handful of rules about using the ham bands.

Yeah, fuck that noise. Just need a radio-transmitter and a tower. Everything else is just toppings.
And if you actually like the people around you, you can work with disaster relief in areas where communications got destroyed.

Lmao, the blacklisting owner blamed his response on his diabetes.
I guess I have a new go-to excuse for when I show up to the call center 2 hours late drunk off my ass.

Man, should've posted the Megathread link. It's much more coherent and interesting read.
