Most people, by definition, don't hit the top of the charts of those three categories so in order to stop our economy from fucking up even further colleges need to get more people learning how to engineer.

Having gone to a state school and now work for an Ivy League school, I had no idea what I didn't know or wasn't given access to. How do people get this idea in their heads that they're equal?

I doubt that the education quality, at least at an undergraduate level, is that much better. The value of the connections made however would be massive though. I mean you're in class with the next CIA director, reserve bank chair, Shell CEO, , New York Times editor, etc.

It's much more difficult and far more involved than any state school. I don't know where people are getting these ideas that a state school is just as good as an Ivy League school, but I hate to burst your bubble. Even undergraduate.

That matters a lot more for graduate school, where you're going to be working closely with the faculty on bleeding-edge issues.

For undergrad, it doesn't seem to matter so much. The economics research shows that people who get into Ivy League schools, but (for whatever reason) end up going to a state school have essentially the exact same life outcomes as the people who actually did attend the Ivies.

It's the other way around. For example, nobody gives half a shit about Pitt's undergrad programs but Pitt for your MD? Hell yeah.

Harvard is an elite institution, and besides the prestige of academia, they truly pride themselves in having students of good moral standing. It doesn't matter if they were just memes, some of you seem too hung up on that fact- that's toeing a very fine line between intent and actual effects. And to further drive the point home, all you have to do is keep up with the news and look at events that are happening on other college campuses, like American and Baylor. Racism is still alive and well in this country, so of course colleges are going to be on high alert. Of course colleges will want to be sure that the students they admit will contribute to positive discourse. There have been many discussions about such events in the college admissions world, but the conclusion many have come to is that it is not and cannot be simply about "diversity" anymore- it's now come to, are colleges admitting white students who understand the meaning of diversity and can fully realize the effects of their privilege? (yes I said it, that dreaded P word)

Private chat or not, this event should be a solid example of, it's not about being "sensitive" or "politically correct" anymore- it's 2017, we know better, so we should do better, and that includes our future college students.

Once they've started, current college students can sue their schools for breach of contract if the school kicks them out for something that was not clearly against the rules in the student handbook, which basically counts as a contract, Psi Upsilon v. University of Pa., 591 A.2d 755 (Pa. Super. 1991) ("A majority of the courts have characterized the relationship between a private college and its students as contractual in nature").

I'm not sure what contractual rights (if any) admitted students would have, but it's not beyond the realm of possibility that a contract claim could work here.
