I saw the Algerians, I saw the muslim youths, I witnessed the divide and the angst among them. I understand they're largely a poor group and a poorer group is obviously going to draw more from government services. It's not dissimilar from the US.

Alsace is a very conservative region, but a lot of the rhetoric I heard was similar but from rural people who were well off and didn't even encounter muslims on a daily basis. I just think you're exaggerating about how significant of an effect these things are having on the country; France is not doomed and it is not in the gutter, and while I agree that a lot of it is caused by government overreach, Macron is in favor of free markets to an extent and would have been a vastly better choice than Melanchon, who would have just exacerbated these issues.

I'm not trying to discount your experiences on a daily basis, I witnessed the angst and division among the muslims and others there, but I don't have the same pessimism about the country's future as you do, simple as. Yeah, an Algerian stabbed a policeman today, but does that incident doom France? Of course not. Have some optimism about the country, it's reasonable to do so.
