Also, just curious. Why do you think have national 'self esteem' and recognizing the seriousl social problems that minorities have faced/and still face are at odds with each other. I think part of having national pride or self esteem includes being able to recognize past and current mistakes instead of denying or down playing them. A lot of it has manifested in such a way where whites have become sort of a punchline, at least in canada. And, speaking on a personal level, it had an effect on me growing up. I internalized the idea that being white made me boring, just another boring guy, and it made me sort of act like a foolish person. I didn't take anything seriously, I had no ambition or focus in my life, I had no identity, and no one really gave a shit. I was just sort of there, and I hung out with a bunch of wigger/black kids, so that mentality was everywhere. We were always cracking "whites are soo lame" jokes. Anyway, I personally feel better when I tell myself and the rest of the world that I matter, and I get positive results.

I am sorry to hear about your experience. I think an experience like that should help you empathize with minorities and their problems better. Imagine what you were feeling but much much worse. Different minority groups have experienced systemic discrimination, physical harm, and ongoing demonization for trying to break free from their horrible situations that were created by factors out of their control. For example, as a young kid I had a group of white kids approach me in the weeks after 9/11 telling me to get out of their country and to go back where I came from. The US was my country. That shit scarred me. I think of it to this day. That actually helped me empathize with black, LGBTQ, and other minorty groups because that isnt the worst thing to happen relative to what they go through.
