It's the job of every DS to tear down their recruits and build them back up into soldiers. With the current regs in place drill sergeants have had to become ever more creative in how they do it. It's one hell of an experience.
Pre-med as in I'm an undergrad student intending to apply to medical school.
You don't know anything about me. Yes, I did a lot of drugs in high school including opiates and heroin. I also quit on my own when I started college because I wanted to take it seriously. I never stole or scammed like a junkie as someone else accuses me of below. It's been almost two years since I've touched heroin.
In my first year of university I knew about 10 people who were "pre-med". Guess how many became doctors. Spoiler - not a single one.
All the bright eyed first years with their big plans until reality hits them like a sledgehammer. You aren't as special as mommy and daddy told you you are.
I have a friend about to start med school. He's literally the smartest guy I've ever met and he plays a lot for videogames and watches a ridiculous amount of anime. He is the ubermensch.
Yeah. His field of knowledge is narrow. I know plenty of people that know more about history or politics or whatever. It's just that he can read through 90 pages of notes in a night an remember it all.
I'm sure you're pretty darn smart though. And good luck with med school.
My favorite part of that thread was that I learned that despite being in school for manufacturing I am also pre med. who knows I could still go to medical school.
Doctors do over prescribe opiates but at the same time people abuse that over prescription.
For example, my mom had gall bladder surgery in January. Quick, out patient surgery. Her surgeon sent her home with 30 opiate based pain pills. She took two, dropped the rest in a pill recycling box at the police station.
Someone else with that many pills could absolutely sell them or take them, becoming addicted.
Point being, doctors need to think about use before prescribing large amounts of pills. After out patient gall bladder surgery the only scenario where someone would need 30 pills is one where they would also likely need to return to the hospital because of complications.
Throwing out perfectly good pills does seem barbaric, but maybe she was concerned that other people in their family would try to find and steal them otherwise? In fact, maybe she didn't throw them out and it's just the story she told /u/botchlings, knowing his tendencies?
Any scenario where you'd need strong pain medication would likely also require a trip to the doctor. It's not that you won't 100% need it in the future but there aren't many instances where you'd be in a significant amount of pain and not need to see a doctor.
These sound like the comments of someone whose brother is (or was) a junkie so now his entire family has this weird neurosis involving opiates because blaming the pills is easier than blaming the person
Why do you think you're not going to need it? What's the harm to have it lying around just in case? (well, unless you're a Trump supporter and therefore have junkies in your family etc etc)
I know people - families that the ACA was supposed to "help" who had no trouble affording insurance prior to the ACA. Under the ACA they can't afford insurance.
And before you say "single payer" is the solution, I know plenty of people who live in co tries with a single payer system that hate it.
If some retard wants to die in his sleep after taking half a bottle of percocet, who the fuck cares? I say don't let inbred hicks ruin it for everyone else.
"I don't speak Mandarin yet, but someday I'm gonna major in it so y'all Chinamen better STFU when I lecture you about how you don't know shit about your native language."
This fucking doctor needs to be arrested with his asinine interpretation of the NEJM article. Why the fuck is the U.S. the only place with the preponderance of opioid prescription and as many people that need pain management compared to any other developed nation in the world. Folks like this idiot try to minimize the problem of opioids, for crying out loud half of all drugs prescribed in my state were opioids. If people really need opioids in that amount, then we have big fucking problem.
I had appendicitis with a pain level of 5/10 and a doctor prescribed me 2 months of oxy after talking to me for five minutes. I just wanted my appendix removed and some advil.

Haven't we seen similar posts from junkies in the past? The "you don't know what we go through" and the extreme defensiveness seems familiar.

Yes, it's classic junky repertoire. I'm surprised their tirade wasn't longer because junkies ramble like they're authors paid by word count.

The dude has a point but it's lost in his cringe.

Now that, that is fucking abuse.

1 ManhattanTransFur 2017-07-29
Perhaps. Throwing out perfectly good medicine that is not easy to acquire is foolishness. That shit should go in your med kit, not the toilet.
1 botchlings 2017-07-29
Why? If you're not going to use or need it?
You shouldn't throw medication of any sort in the toilet. It can leech into groundwater that way.
1 ManhattanTransFur 2017-07-29
How the fuck you know you not gonna need it? You from the future, motherfucker? You Donald J. Trump?
1 botchlings 2017-07-29

Have you never been outdoors? In an emergency? Hunting? Backpacking? The doctor ain't always about, mate.
1 UmmahSultan 2017-07-29
And yet they sell Tylenol at the store and encourage people to take it when in pain for things that they don't go to the hospital for.
Yes, I understand that acetamophin is not the same thing as fentanyl but it would be nice to take a Vicodin after stubbing my toe.
1 botchlings 2017-07-29
Are you seriously trying to compare tylenol to opiate based pain medication, or any other prescription pain medication?
Sarcasm? If not, that's the sort of entitlement that has helped to create the opioid problem we currently have in this country.
1 SpectroSpecter 2017-07-29
These sound like the comments of someone whose brother is (or was) a junkie so now his entire family has this weird neurosis involving opiates because blaming the pills is easier than blaming the person
Or you know, whatever
1 botchlings 2017-07-29
No addiction problems in my family whatsoever, but we do live in an area that has been ravaged by opioid abuse.
1 botchlings 2017-07-29
Lol, no.
There's no reason to keep medication that you aren't going to use or need and you don't want to just flush the stuff down the toilet.
I wonder why you'd find disposing of pills "barbaric?"
1 Works_of_memercy 2017-07-29
Why do you think you're not going to need it? What's the harm to have it lying around just in case? (well, unless you're a Trump supporter and therefore have junkies in your family etc etc)
1 botchlings 2017-07-29
I think any injury that would require pain medication stronger than aspirin would also require a visit to the doctor.
1 Works_of_memercy 2017-07-29
But what if ACA gets repelled and you don't have insurance any more?
1 botchlings 2017-07-29
The ACA is terrible. It's done nothing but make my insurance premiums increase.
Beyond that, I had private insurance before the ACA and I will have it long after the ACA is gone (or implodes)
1 Works_of_memercy 2017-07-29
UUUU

To be fair medical students are fucking awful and should be shot on sight once they even try to suggest a diagnosis or the best course of action.
Also the way some American doctors use opioids is pants on retarded.
