It was because the US congress decided that groups advocating pedophilia were not allowed government funding, it had nothing to do with image or morality.
Image was part of it. Homosexual men were often regarded as the ones who abused children, the group NAMBLA being so close to gay rights was causing a huge issue with its image. But the money thing was part of it as well.
The Christians were right. By making gay marriage legal we're now heading toward castrating children and manipulating them into getting cosmetic surgery, and slowly heading toward legalised pedophilia.

Just like you claimed that allowing easy divorce would NEVER lead to gay marriage, or to near total dissolution of the American family (since divorce reform, family formation and live births have dropped off a cliff).
