What happened is the same as in Port Suez: someone made allegations to the local authorities in Cypria, they detained some of the crew and questioned them, checked the documents etc. Then they let them go again.

There was a post about this a few days ago that had links to a bunch of different articles (not just NGO websites) and they all seemed to say about the same thing: the ship didn't have proper papers, the master and 1st mate are detained, a bunch of their "crew" has applied for asylum. Is it possible that some leftwing organization paid the crew to file for asylum? Yes, and I hope very much that I live in a world where that's true because it's fucking hilarious, but unless you actually have links to reputable articles that dispute the core facts of this story I'm not gonna believe you.
The "crew" got detained and deported back to Sri Lanka. Pretty sure that is not the normal way "apprentice crew" is treated.
'Defend Europe' is a scam to siphon money out of mayo teenagers but now they are smuggling in some exotic fillings for German bussy too so I guess they're okay in my book.

You can find Sri Lankans in half the ships in Europe's harbors. At the same time the number of Sri Lankan asylum seekers is tiny, not even in the top 30 countries or origin mentioned in official EU statistics.
So lots of ship workers globally are Sri Lankan. And as in many jobs before you get the full job, you're an apprentice. Makes a little more sense for those to be on board a large ship.
