Journalists implicated in the scandal wrote articles in the MSM to claim that gamergate was a hate movement and a response to women playing video games (I added this a bit late in the explanation but it went on since near the start of GG, that's what the "gamers are dead" articles were), trying to paint their critics as misogynists. Anti-GG claimed that they were being harassed by le spooky misogynists and went to the UN (seriously) and made fake charities like Crash Override Network which was meant to be anti-dox but was secretly doxxing gamergators. Lots more stuff happened but I can't recall it off the top of my head, GG is falsely painted as some sort of alt-right movement is basically what you need to know. Also GG and anti-GG are both very autistic
