That part of the article disgusts me and now I feel dumb for being naive enough to think mathematicians would be better than that level of dudebro bs. I don't know how "they" would stop things like that but if I saw a group of male classmates act like that I'd be disgusted with them as people. And probably hang and discuss math more exclusively with the women. There's no top-down solution for things like that. It's up to individual guys to try to influence the group to act differently.

Before I clicked the link I thought this was going to be about Emmy Noether... because oddly enough, I guess Hitler actually did kick a woman out of mathematics.

In high school my male math teachers were much better than my female math teachers. The men seemed to have this complete and deep grasp of what they were teaching, how it fit into the broader context, and if students pushed beyond the material or struggled with the material they seemed to have no problem going there or explaining it in a different way. The women seemed extremely stiff like they learned the steps and how to teach them in a certain way but didn't have this bigger picture all encompassing ability. Could have been the subjects though: I had men for algebra ii, calculus, and comp sci. I had women for geometry and trig/pre calc.

In college I was a math major. All the profs were men (duh) but the male TAs were all better than the female TAs for what felt like the same reason as in high school. The distribution of sexes was roughly uniform between algebra/analysis/topology kinda of subjects so I don't think it was a "topic" effect.

I had a really good and competent female linguistics ta though who did something pretty quantitative in linguistics. Also a girl in my algebra group was really really excellent at coming up with off the wall but ultimately good ideas to do the proofs. She was legit bonkers though.

If you can't talk about grody sexual shit and get a laugh out of it with someone you're not friends, you're colleagues. These people may literally never have had an actual friend and that's sad.
