You'll get it explained to you that they're a bunch of thieving scum with no respect for anyone outside their own little communities. They set up shop somewhere and promptly set about nicking everything that isn't nailed down (unless they've got crowbars in which case even that won't save you) and generally making the environment unpleasant to live in. Then, when they've thoroughly ruined everything in the vicinity, they move on to the next unspoiled patch and leave the actual residents to clean up their mess.
Generally when a group is universally disliked across all borders and cultures then they might actually be a bunch of assholes.
A couple of times as a kid, gypsies had moved into our area, finding a bit of land to annex and shit up with their god forsaken way of life. They'd terrorise the area with their packs of dogs, drinking, shooting air rifles and brazen burglary/mugging/thieving. Police would work as quick as possible to move them on so they back someone else's problem.
My sister failed at independent life, and not long after graduating as a teacher, moved back to our home town and got a job at our old high school. I'd long since left my home town at this point, but her job did lead to a good gypo story.
At the back of the playing field was some unused land. Some gypos got wind of this and moved their shanty town to it. Parents were concerned, due to the having the feral pikies in such close proximity to a school.
A few days after the gypos had arrived, a special school assembly was called and the head announced that until the gypsies had been relocated, the school field was off limits to pupils. My sister assumed this was to protect the children, but found out the gypos had come to the school to complain that the kids had been terrorising them, throwing stones and insults through the wire fence.
It's the first and only bit of civic pride I felt towards my old school and home town. Fucking gypsies.
