Advocacy and civil rights are how the upper-middle class competes for social status. The economic gap to upper class is too big to feasibly attain, so they have to compete by showing how much spare time they have to waste.
They will never advocate helping the working class because the worker class, at this stage, are fairly conservative by modern standards. Instead, they'll keep selling city-dwellers on the promise of welfare to help out the lower classes, meanwhile they let them rot because it's about feeling like they're doing something more than it is about getting results.
Identity politics is their way of acting oppressed when they are in fact quite privileged. For instance, the ["Shrieking Girl" at Yale University]. If you keep highlighting how tough it is to be non-white, or a woman, or trans, or gay, maybe everyone will forget that you grew up with a cushy upper middle class lifestyle and will realize that the white people in the Rust Belt or Appalachia are the ones with the real privilege.
And it's frustrating, because if someone if discriminated against nowadays and we see it on the news, our initial reaction isn't 'this is fucked up, how can we help?' it's 'can we prove this really happened?' because of these people. They've made people more cynical because of their fetishism of oppression.
It really sucks. It makes people who want to engage in activism more weary because no one wants to associate with their narcissism.

I think this is similarly where the idea of "virtue signalling" comes from. By being the "wokest" you rise up the hierarchy. You get placed near the front of the "progressive stack." The narcissists realized what's up.
For instance, consider what happened to opal. You have this outsider who wants to exert control over a project and remove the #3 contributor. These people do not want to be judged by their contributions, because as my hero in this story said:

Once they think you are convinced that the the patriarchy exists and you have good friends inside the group, they start their 'teach men not to rape' or 'girl gamers are harassed daily' nonsense. It's not about helping others. If these people went to women's shelters weekly or did any other volunteer work then I wouldn't have a problem with them. It's about manipulating others and it is really fucked up.
